This is a clear cut violation of this child's rights.

Look at Richards vs. Thurston... still holds up in court.

There goes free speech... we seen similar cases in the 1970's one Richards vs. Thurston stands out. It went all the way to the supreme court and it was deemed a violation of the student's free speech.

Take a look... and hope this young man has a GOOD laywer.

My kids HS wrestling team gets mowhawks before their match with a certain cross town rivalry. It's done in fun, solidarity and no one has a problem with it. We've found other schools teams periodically do it too. When our pro teams have big playoff games, the kids, teachers, staff wear the colors of the team, some dye their hair for the occasion. It's FUN! This kid is showing his support for his team. The school needs to pick it's battles.

From what I see in the picture the child has a hair style. Now if his hair was still blue they may have more of a chance to say your hair is distracting therefore something must be done or face the consequences. So honestly I see the school stifling that child's right. He has the right to cut his hair into any form of style within reason. A Mohawk is a form of style just as a high and tight is another form of hair style. I feel to be legally correct the school must implement a guideline from the very start if they really wish to be that petty informing parents on what type of hair styles little boys and girls should have. Imagine that females only allowed french braids and boys high and tight. Education is important I agree wholly but I am also against citizens being treated like a puppet.

I am happy for him. Kids can have no way of expressing themselves anymore in our society and he stood up and said no. I think the dress code policies are completly bogus. Just another way for the school to pin a lable of criminal on a inocent kid. I am with all of you fire the school staff this is a crime. I hope the family does sue there school district and who cares how broke they are. Apparently the kid had more smarts than the school staff any way.

I understand an employee being reprimanded for a haircut that is clearly unprofessional, but a freakin middle schooler that is just supporting his team? Give me a break. The Rays should give that kid playoff tickets for being so loyal. What other haircuts are banned? Jared Weaver's golden hippie locks? Manny's dreads? Giambi's greaser/molester hairdo? Either this school has zero real disciplinary problems or is ran by such an incompetent administration that this is one of the only rules they enforce. Way to go dude!

Several kids in my daughter's elementary school have Mohawks and not out of support of anything whatsoever - they just like them. Big deal. Personally I think it looks a lot better than that bedhead, mophead grungy style that was popular for a while. Do they allow corn rows? Pony tails? Long hair? Where do they draw the line?

Most importantly, how are the kid's grades?

I think it is funny that the school thinks it would be okay to look like a skinhead at school and the Mohawk is a problem. Geez.

I live near Kansas City, they should be happy to have a professional team worth supporting and leave the kid alone. If things there are like they have been here it could be 25 years (and counting) before they make it to the playoffs again!

A seventh-grade student was suspended for a day by his Palmetto, Fla., middle school -- but his principles remain intact and uncompromised.

Zachary Sharples decided on Sunday to get a Rayhawk -- the hairstyle that's taken the region by storm -- in a show of support for the Tampa Bay Rays after their loss Sunday to the White Sox in Game 3 of the ALDS.

The 12-year-old got a mohawk and sprayed it blue, washing out the dye Sunday night before bed.

On Monday, officials at Lincoln Middle School deemed the do a violation of dress code. They gave Sharples two choices: shave his head and return to class -- or serve an in-school suspension.

The choice was easy.

"My son is a diehard baseball fan. He's not a bad kid, he doesn't get into trouble," Sharples' dad told the Bradenton Herald. "All you see in the news right now is about the Rays. ... Now 500 to 1,000 people are walking around with mohawks. It's not offensive."

Do you think young Zachary made the right choice? Or would you have denounced your team to avoid getting in trouble? (Not like you'd ever admit it.)
