It was a long day for JaMarcus Russell -- and Raiders fans.
AP

It's only one game, but the Raiders were no better under new coach Tom Cable than his predecessor, Lane Kiffin. Did anyone expect them to be this bad in Cable's first game as head coach?

The final score – Saints 34, Raiders 3 – suggests things will get worse before they get better for Oakland.

The Raiders trailed 10-3 at halftime. Whatever Cable, the former offensive line coach, told his team in the locker room didn't resonate with the players as the Saints scored 24 unanswered points in the second half.

Whatever Kiffin said to Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell earlier in the week also was counterproductive. Raiders owner Al Davis, who fired Kiffin on Sept. 30 after their public feud, could not have happy that Kiffin called Russell and offered advice about the Saints to the second-year quarterback.

Russell took a step back in his development, completing just 13 of 35 passes for 159 yards. He was responsible for two turnovers, throwing an interception and fumbling.

Any suggestions, Raider Nation?

Hopefully, the gaunlet of mediocore coaches will not follow Lane Kiffin the way it did Mike Shanhan. I'm guessing that the Kiffin dismissal has put the Raiders back at least three season's. Who cares, no matter how bad the Niners are the Raiders will always be the little brother team of the Bay. Sorry, but that is the truth. Raider fans that is your cue to cuss and call me names.

Well, I'm not a Raider's fan. I also agree 100% with you. The Raiders will be mediocre as long as Al Davis is calling the shots.

October 12, 2008  06:53 PM ET

I agree with you Mac. Im shocked the bay area even allows the Raiders to stay (cant they lose as well in Los Angeles...). The 49ers havent been great, but the Raiders make the 9er's look like a super bowl champ. Great job there Al.

Honestly, even though I am a Niner's fan, I have been a big Raider apologist especially with Raider fans. I liked what Kiffin was doing, he was the least of that team's problems. I'd certainly take his leadership then Sharp-Dressed Nolan. Once Mr. Davis discarded Kiffin I could only stick up for them so much. It is hard.

I would hate to be a Raiders fan right now.

The offense can't stay on the field long enough to give the defense rest. Whether it's play calling or execution - doesn't matter. You just can't win with a tired defense.

October 12, 2008  08:50 PM ET

The Raiders can still keep their fans watching if they agree to the following:

1. A "wall of fire" shooting up across the 50 yard line.

2. Injured players have to lay on the field, until after the game: you have to run around them.

3. Each team gets to have one sniper with one bullet in the stands.

Not much less than that is going to keep my television on during the game.

I have been a Raider fan for over 40 years. The past 15 years have been misery. Even the Super Bowl year in San Diego was a downer. I'm still hopeful the Raiders will rise again. But for that to happen, I'll have to outlive Al Davis!

Mac, I'm a life long Raiders fan who cannot turn his back on the team but none-the-less agree with your comment. What this franchise needs is the exodus of Al Davis and that is not happening. In a way, and I can't believe I'm saying this, I am glad they lost today just to spite Davis after firing Kiffin. No offense to Cable, but his hiring wasn't the answer. There's only answer and isn't happening until death do us part (Davis and the Raiders). I'm not wishing the man dead by any means, but that will be the positive when he does pass - a brighter day for the Raiders.

I have put my season tickets up for sale. I'm done. Until the organization get revamped from the top down, I will no longer spend my time or money going to the games, which is something my son and I love doing. At least I can turn off the radio and or the TV when they show no heart or passion. This is all AD's fault. Thanks Al, you have single handedly destroyed the team I love.

JaMarcus Russell has bust written all over him.

Really sad the team is these days. A once proud team is reduced to nothing.......I hope they bounce back

October 12, 2008  10:00 PM ET

I feel bad for the Raiders...I enjoyed watching them under Gruden when Gannon played, but even then it was somewhat tainted. I hope for Oakland's sake that JaMarcus Russell is not a bust, but i've been saying since he was drafted that he was going to be awful. He only threw for 300 yards ONCE in college, and that was his final game against Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl.

You have been a RAIDERS fan longer than I have (maybe a decade longer) and I agree with you 100% and we will need to outlive Mr. Davis by about 5 years to see our Silver & Black making back to an era of respect and winnning. I have said it several times Ryan & Mr. Davis need to leave town.

I???ve been a Raider fans since the mid 70???s and I???m sick and tried of watching this mess they call football. This team will never be anything until Al is out of the picture. Al is a football legend and now he???s just ruining this team. He can???t get any quality coaches and pretty soon all the decent players are going to leave and nobody is going to want to play. Some of the players we have now look like they???re just playing for a pay check. If he keeps the team he needs to have somebody makes the football decisions for him. To me he keeps making bad choices all he???s looking at is speed and nothing else. He draft Russell and then trade Randy Moss how in the hell is he going to throw to. I think our receivers have the least catches and yards then any other recovering core in the league.
To me it looked like Kiffin had something working and now Al set us back again. Thanks Al, you made decide not purchase the DirecTV NFL tickets next years. I wonder if I can get a refund on for the remainder of the season because, I can not watch these Raiders anymore.

The passing of Al Davis is the only way that the Raiders can get out of the funk that they are in. That old relic is the father of the most dysfunctional family in all of professional sports. Being a Raiders fan has been tough over the past few years. Until that antique passes away, not only will "the greatness of the Raiders" and "commitment to excellence" be absent, but the word "playoffs" will not even be in the Raiders' vocabulary.
