The infamous Santa story occurred on Dec 15, 1968.

It was the last game of a 2-12 season. Then owner Jerry Wolman had just traded away future HOF quarterback Sonny Jurgensen to Washington. The team was losing at halftime.

A parade was scheduled for halftime but the snowstorm left the floats inoperable. So instead of a halftime show, they decided to have some half-drunk guy jog around in a Santa suit.

The rest is history.

Thank you for posting the TRUTH! As a 50 year Philly sports fan, I am sick of hearing this Santa story without the FACTS associated with it. In addition, you forgot to mention that the halftime show was taking way too long, which was part of the reason for all the boos, in addition to the drunk Santa, which was a disgraceful display to the children watching in the stands.

Philly fans turned out in droves to celebrate on Broad Street

William Thomas Cain/Getty Images

PHILADELPHIA -- Philadelphia may have had the worst teams of the last century, but it definitely has the best pro sports fans of any team in the country. Watching a sea of exuberant fans clad in red in Center City Philadelphia not only reinforces the wonderful loyalty of these fans, but underscores how lame every other city's fans are.

If you judge a town's fan base on knowledge, passion and loyalty, who's even close? Let's look at Philly's competition.

Boston -- Is there a more annoying fan base than the Nation? Although they are knowledgeable and intense, Pats, Bruins and Celtics fans, who are only on board when the going is good.

Chicago -- Not bad, but the schism between Cubs and White Sox fans is a major fault. Philly hasn't had that problem since the A's left.

New York -- Like Chicago, too many teams to unify the fan base and too many other options for entertainment other than sports. There's nothing else going on in Philly.

Los Angeles -- Are there any sports fans in L.A.?

Washington D.C. -- Redskins ownership has taken some of the starch out of the team's loyal fan base. They're still into the team, but they're rightfully cynical about Daniel Snyder. D.C. will move up in the standings if it gets a pro baseball team.

Miami -- They were better off when the Hurricanes had the second-highest payroll in town. Can't knock Dolphins fans, but not much to say for Marlins or Heat faithful.

Atlanta -- As disinterested as Los Angeles fans, just with fewer excuses for leaving games early.

Dallas -- Not really a four-sport town, since the Cowboys suffocate the entire market. Cowboys fans are too civilized compared to their NFC East brethren.

Cleveland -- Probably the closest fan base to Philly. Knowledgeable, enthusiastic, borderline violent. But this is the city that let the Browns get away and could let LeBron go too. Not the fans' fault, but you have to wonder if there's anything more they could do.

Houston -- Not the same since the "Luv Ya Blue" Oilers left town. How excited can football fans really get in a stadium with a retractable roof?

Pittsburgh -- Could be real competition for Philly if the baseball team weren't so cheap and there was a hoops team.

Cincinnati -- The Bengals? C'mon.

St. Louis -- Best baseball fans in the world. But let's face it, Rams fans don't cut it.

Detroit -- In Philly they boo their opponents, they don't slug it out with them in the stands.

Denver -- Have you ever met a Nuggets fan?

Bay Area -- Even Eagles fans are a little scared of Raiders fans, but the lameness of the San Francisco crowds overwhelms how cool Oakland is. How can any self-respecting fan buy sushi at a ballpark?

Baltimore: Colts fans were great, but that's ancient history. All you need to know about Orioles fans is they yell 'O' during the National Anthem.

Tampa Bay -- Such a shame the Rays couldn't reward all 26 of their loyal fans with a World Series title.

If you have any other cities to nominate, make your argument in the Comments section. For the record, I grew up in Philly and have been waiting 25 years to write this column.
