Theres no doubt that Bonds was a great player, but being a great player doesn't make you exempt from this list. His teammates were glad to see him leave, as was the organization. That should be the number one indicator, in fact the idea that he was so good yet not welcome back proves his place on this list. He created a media circus for his team wherever he went and his performance on the field was for his own record book. He took roids which actually puts a negative spin on any accomplishment the Giants had while he was there. Sounds pretty destructive to me. If he wasn't destructive he would have played in 2008. It's not just a coincidence that no GM or owner wanted to deal with him.

Wow! How long has Nina Mandell been writing about sports . . . 3 weeks?! The premise is somewhat interesting but the execution is consistent w/ the talent of SI for Kids.

Barry Bonds MADE the Giants. PacBell/AT&T wouldn't exist w/o Barry Bonds. He hit .336 w/ 46homers and 123RBIs in 1993 in Candlestick. While it's true some people couldn't wait to get away from Barry off the field (say Jeff Kent) no one has ever doubted the value of playing with him . . . particularly if he's behind you in the order. 'Barry being Barry' didn't damage the Giants in any meaningful way.

The rest of the list is equally sophomoric. While none of these guys are role models, calling them the five MOST destructive teammates is hyperbole. Here's one for your list, how about Grant Hill? Did anyone ever do more damage to an NBA team than his oversized contract in Orlando? He's absolutely a nice a guy and on the court (when healthy) he was fantastic. But he really handcuffed that team for years and easily cost them 9-figures in salary and lost revenue.

I've played basketball, football, and baseball, and of the three sports, the one where I couldn't care less how surly my teammate was is baseball. As long as he never dogged it on the bases, or wasted at bats, I wouldn't care.

If my basketball teammate didn't box out, or hogged the ball, I would be in his face. If a football player didn't block or run his routes hard everytime, I would be upset. Most who play sports understand the biggest insult is when one idiot is playing for himself whild you're busting your butt to play for the team. No doubt, Barry wasn't easy to get along with, but he brought it.

Say what you want about Barry, but he was great all the time. The fact that he is the major league leader in walks says it all.

<quoted-text>Manny is a pain in the **** but Manny escapes this list for 1 simple reason. His time in Cleveland? 2 World series appearrances. Boston? 2 Championships. L.A.? Half a season there and they go to the LCS. Coincidence? I think not.</quoted-text>

Manny should not escape the list. He is an excellent hitter, there is no doubt about that. But how about his status as a teammate? How about his integrity to the game? It has been clearly documented that Manny has intentionally "dogged it" on occasion because he is upset about something. In my opinion things like standing there watching three perfectly good pitches go by you thus striking out to end a game ranks up there with "throwing a game". Situations like that should be looked at in the same manner as a gambler would. After all, what's the difference?

When we give these guys this kind of attention, it just fuels their antics. Any idiot I see wearing a Ocho Cinco Jersey next year will prove their low IQ and ethical boundaries. Most of these players who act out do it for very selfish reasons and it all comes down to self esteem and confidence. When we feed their ego with these stories, we fuel the fire. Turn your back on those who play these team sports without a team mindset and they may fade away into the sunset, never to bother us or a police blotter again...

Just an FYI, this list is far from complete and would probably run into the hundreds between all sports. From Broadway Joe, to Keyshawn, to T.O., to Larry Johnsons, up to Ocho Cinco, this has been a growing problem since the late 60's early 70's with all pro sports. Money is the fuel for the fire and us "fans" who will not turn our backs on the morons keep it stoked...

Barry Bonds was one of history's most divisive teammates.

Heinz Kluetmeier/SI

In honor of Stephon Marbury's possible (impending?) divorce from the Knicks, we've put together our list of the five most destructive teammates in sports -- the athletes who we'd most likely avoid regardless of their talent. Here's our top five...

1. Barry Bonds: Now that he's gone, is there anyone on the Giants missing Barry Bonds? Whether you care about the steroids or not, the negative media attention Bonds attracted translated into a guarded, surly attitude in the clubhouse -- where he had a diva-like mass of private space. When it was rumored he was on his way out, few teammates spoke up -- but the seperation goes back much longer than that. In 2001, second basemen Jeff Kent told SI: "On the field, we're fine but off the field, I don't care about Barry and Barry doesn't care about me. [Pause.] Or anybody else."

2. Rafael Palmeiro: With a nickname like Raffy, you'd think a lot couldn't go bad with the ex-Orioles super slugger. Until he calls you out in front a congressional committee. After testing positive for steroids, Palmerio said it was probably due to a B-12 shot he received from then-teammate Miguel Tejada. Ouch.

3. Terrell Owens: Sure, now he'll put on sunglasses and cry when you insult his quarterback for being distracted by Jessica Simpson, but can anyone ever really get past what he did in Philly? From roasting Donovan McNabb over every mistake to allegedly fighting teammates in the locker room, T.O. managed to do much more harm than good, putting the locker room on such edge that when he was finally traded to the Dallas Cowboys, Philly players breathed a collective sigh of relief. But perhaps it wasn't even an Eagles teammate that summed up T.O. so well -- in 2006, after hearing that T.O. was working on a children's book called Little T Learns To Share, Giants running back Tiki Barber said, "He may be drawing on someone else's experiences."

4. Chad Johnson: Ocho Cinco may provide us with some entertaining times -- like legally changing his name to "Ocho Cinco" -- but there's humor, and then there's punching a coach. Rumors swirled for three years that some sort of skirmish had taken place during halftime of a Bengals vs. Steelers playoff game, but this past March, Shaun Smith confirmed that Johnson had indeed punched Marvin Lewis. Probably not who I’d want to sit next to on the bench.

5. Steve Smith: Training camp fights may be part of the game. But straight punching? Not in the code. The Carolina Panthers' receiver served a two-game suspension after punching Ken Lucas during a training camp practice. Sure, Smith could have just been having a bad day, but then there's also the 2002 incident when he attacked former teammate Anthony Bright in the film room. So has he learned his lesson? "Yes, I've made the mistake twice," he told the Charlotte Observer. "I don't plan on making it a third." I think we learned that lesson in second grade.

Athletes aren’t always the best teammates to have around. Who are some that you’d like to avoid? Let us know below...
