The 2 week wait between the championship games and the Super Bowl are pure hell for the die hard fans especially with all the insufferable hype and over analysis by the empty talking heads. I'm all for filling that lag with a Pro Bowl game kicking off the week of Super Bowl festivities at the same site. More money for the local economy and more exposure for the host city. The players who play in the Super Bowl (especially the losers) usually skip the game anyway, so any player voted in will be excused for the game. If they have bonus clauses they still should get paid even if they don't play because they were named to the Pro Bowl squad. It may not add anymore excitement or viewers to the event, but it still is a better alternative to what we have now, which is a major anti-climatic crash after the big game.

And here's another thought - NFLPA ...

Does anyone think that taking away the chance for members of the Super Bowl teams to make/play the Pro Bowl, and get a chance at MVP, and the money that goes with it (in contract incentives) unilaterally by the NFL is going to fly? Does anyone think the NFLPA might just have a little something to say about it? Does anyone think the owner or coach of a Super Bowl team is going to let ANY of their players step on the field even for a TOUCH FOOTBALL GAME a week before THE BIGGEST SPORTING EVENT ON THE PLANET? How long is the contract for the Pro Bowl in Hawaii? What about TV contracts with the network?

Peter King is a blow-hard ... do some research before making these idiotic predictions/announcements ... here's a quarter, buy a clue.

Any All-Star Game means nothing if the fans vote. Sorry, I'm a fan, but I trust neither myself nor any other fan to make a completely unbiased judgment. Without a change in the voting, and without a change in game consequences (a la MLB), the Pro Bowl will always be nothing more than a preseason game played several months too late.

If the Pro Bowl is held at the Super Bowl site and it does not involve SB participants, how about move it up to the day before the big game? This will really make it a weekend full of football and the coaches of the conference championship losers will have time to prepare.

It is all about HYPE and timing!! What makes MLB entertaining is the Celebrety Games and the HOMER RUN DERBY!! Who knows about the events the Pro Bowl has, they are usually aired during the day when people are at work!! You have to HYPE up the events to make the main event more attracting!! Moving the game a week before the Super Bowl isnt a bad idea because SB players usually opt out anyways!!! NEED NIGHT TIME EVENTS DAYS PRIOR TO GAME WITH A LOT OF HYPE!! SKILLS COMPETITION WITH LOTS OF HYPE< OLD PLAYERS AND BIG NAME CELEBRITIES IN FLAG FOOTBALL WITH NIGHT TIME HYPE! Bring more commercials to the events instead of the main event!!

I think Hawaii has lost its lustre for the pro bowl. The stadium is a rust bucket and doesn't feed the NFL's thirst for corporate suites. This potential decision is about more money for the NFL coffers. Aside from the weather, Honolulu is really NYC with a beach, really congested and not fun. The only reason to go there is to visit Pearl Harbor once and drive up to the north shore of Oahu. If you want a Hawaiian vacation, then any one of the other islands provides a better impression and vacation.
If the league wants a venue that supports players bringing their families, etc., then why not Orlando -- the theme park capital of the world. They could play at the citrus bowl, which is due a makeover in the next few years. Given the location of the next two supe bowls (Tampa and Miami) and I'm sure many more after that, Orlando is a better fit for the league.

Pop quiz: Who won the 2006 Pro Bowl and who was the game's Most Valuable Player?

Chances are you don't know and couldn't care less, which is why the NFL is revamping its annual all-star game. SI.com's Peter King reported the news item in his weekly magnum opus.

Look for this to be the last year the Pro Bowl is played the week after the Super Bowl. As I reported on NBC last night, the league likely will announce in the next few weeks the moving of the game to the weekend before the Super Bowl -- either on Saturday night, Sunday, or Monday night, depending on network preference -- as part of the pre-Super Bowl buildup. In addition, I look for the league to play more than half of future Pro Bowls on the mainland instead of Honolulu, mostly at the same site of the Super Bowl to maximize attention and focus on an all-star game that has become totally irrelevant. Next season the Super Bowl is in Miami. I expect the rotation to begin then, with the Pro Bowl quite possibly at Dolphins Stadium either eight, seven or six days before the Super Bowl.

What do you think about the decision to revamp the Pro Bowl? Would you be more or less inclined to watch if the game was played before the Super Bowl? If you're Roger Goodell, how do you alter the Pro Bowl to make it interesting?

Peter King: Monday Morning QB [SI.com]
