Vikings526 is obviously a complete moron. As much as I hate to defend Columbus, being a Chicago Fire fan, they had a bus load of 80 people travel to LOS ANGELES for the final and MANY more there at that game that made their own travel plans. They numbered in the thoudands. Their championship rally was held in front of "thousands" on the steps of the state capitol (there is a Columbus Dispatch photo that clearly shows this sea of people). Lastly, the even had a crowd of "over 100" crowd the airport to welcome them back.

This was all in the papers, but then again that is probably Vikings526's problem. Its hard to learn anything from the newspaper when you have a second-grade reading level.

I agree with the suggestion that soccer implement a post-game review, but it ought to include the refs, too. In the video posted that ref, and probably the linesman as well, should be penalized in some manner.

I think futbol should celebrate the diving; I would replace the shootout tiebreaker with a dive-off. You could have judges like in real diving or gymnastics, multipy it by degree of difficulty, and award extra points for creative use of a stretcher.
I appreciate the athletic talent and conditioning and teamwork of top level soccer. But. It's hard to take soccer seriously for an old American like me, raised in our society where playing hurt is not only celebrated but expected and demanded and feigning injury is abhorrent and worthy of universal contempt. While I certainly don't endorse the first comment posted above, consider that Paul Pierce is still being ridiculed for going off on a stretcher in last years NBA playoffs only to come back into the game minutes later; and the most common reaction was that "this isn't soccer, for bleeps sake".
I used to have a bumper sticker that read "It takes leather balls to play rugby". I won't be deliberately antagonistic, but suffice it to say that no one's ever said that about soccer.

That was pitiful...I ref soccer and the linesman (as somebody else pointed out) definitely should've flagged offsides regardless of the what the center ref did or didn't see. Horrible and inexcusable. As a player there's a huge difference between 'diving' and going down when you're getting fouled. A diver is looking for contact from the defender so he can 'flop' and that's garbage..

As far as the popularity of soccer in this country....it will be the most popular sport in this country within 50 years. There are more kids in this country playing youth soccer than any other sport BY FAR. In my city in North Carolina even the adult soccer leagues have more people in them than any other sport. People who think it's an effeminate euro thing have never played because they suck so they don't understand the game so it's boring for them to watch...no big deal.

I love soccer, but this is one of the reasons it will have a hard time ever being big in the US. It contains one part of the worst aspect of the NBA (flopping, a la Divac), one part of the worst aspect of the NFL (whole nations of Raiders fans) and one part of the worst aspect of the MLB (buy yourself a great team!).

But this is probably the most mentioned criticism I hear from non-Soccer fans, and the one that draws the most derision. Not only is it silly, but it reinforces the American notion that soccer is effeminate or unmanly. Do something about the flopping!

We're massive soccer fans here at For The Record. Absolutely mad for it.

But if we could change one thing about the Beautiful Game, we'd allow officials to review video after the game and issue retroactive yellow cards for any player who dives in an effort to win a free kick or a penalty. Fewer players would risk faking a foul if they knew it could result in sitting out a game.

Such measures might not be necessary if diving hadn't become a worldwide epidemic. Case in point: this phantom foul from a game between Junior Barranquilla and América de Cali in Colombia's top division. (Wouldn't Raja Bell be proud?)

Have you ever seen an Oscar-worthy performance like this -- in any sport -- actually get rewarded by a whistle from the referee?
