It doesn't just specify that they were professional championship rings. So I wonder how many are football and basketball national championship rings. That would make more sense to me. Not all of the players on a NC football or basketball team are going to go pro and some of these guys just quit college without graduating so their ability to make a viable income is limited.

Well not every player makes a million a year or for that matter a million in a career. Most of these players on the NFL side pawning their rings could be guys who were bench players who are not out of football. A couple hundred thousand is nothing to scoff at or feel sorry for but not every player sees a million in their playing time. Just the ones that make headlines.

If you've ever thought about buying an authentic championship ring from one of your favorite teams, CNBC sports business reporter Darren Rovell says your time to buy is now.

"We’ve seen more rings go up for sale in the last three months than ever before," Rovell writes. "It makes sense. It’s the sports world's version of the pawn shop story. Pawn shops do well because they buy low during recessionary times and they can still sell high to those who still have the money."

Rovell spoke with Tim Robins, who claims to buy and sell about 1,200 rings in a year through his resale outpost Championship-Rings.net (a site currently buckling under heavy traffic). Robins says the flagging economy has given his business a boost. "We’ve been getting a lot more items that we would not normally see," Robins says. "I’m talking about older items that were usually family possessions, cherished possessions. But we’ve also newer items. We even had someone who sold their 2008 New York Giants ring. We got a 2007 World Series ring from the Red Sox and these are things that you don’t see come out."

We spent some time scouring the listings on Robins' site and made a number of fascinating finds. Make sure to check it out when it gets back up and running.
