You gotta feel bad for Knicks fans. They've suffered through the Isiah era. They've suffered through the Marbury era. Their team hasn't made the playoffs since 2004 and was riding a five-game losing streak heading into Wednesday's game against the Clippers. But if there's any team who can get a struggling team back on track, it's the Clippers. And things certainly seemed that way heading into the final minute of play.
With about 30 seconds left and the Knicks nursing a one-point lead, David Lee missed a three-pointer from the corner. Al Harrington grabbed the offensive rebound and, with a clear path to the basket, slammed it home to give the Knicks a three-point lead. But for some unknown reason, Harrington felt the need to slap the backboard after the dunk, earning him a quick technical foul. The Clippers converted the free throw, slicing the deficit to two and L.A.'s Zach Randolph scored on the ensuing possession, forcing overtime. The Knicks were outscored in the extra period, 18-14, and lost the game.
So why am I taking the time to post this? Because Harrington's play is, without a doubt, the dumbest play of the NBA season -- maybe the dumbest play I've ever seen. His team was on a five-game losing streak. He just had to convert an open dunk, get back on defense and make one last defensive stop. But that was too much to ask and, now, New York's losing streak has reached a half-dozen games. And for that, Knicks fans, I feel bad for you. Hopefully, this impossibly enthusiastic Gus Johnson call will cheer you up.
What do you think? Is this the dumbest play you've seen in the NBA this season?
