
Former world No. 1 Maria Sharapova (above) returns a shot to Russia's Ekaterina Makarova and Belarus' Tatiana Poutchek during their first-round doubles match Thursday at the Indian Wells Masters near Palm Springs, Calif. Sharapova, 24, was inactive the past seven months while rehabilitating her surgically repaired right shoulder, missing the Beijing Olympics, U.S. Open and Australian Open -- where she was the reigning champion. Yesterday, she lost 6-1, 4-6, 10-7 alongside compatriot Elena Vesnina (below, after the jump).
