The problem is that SI cannot think beyond the 50 states and probably cannot appreciate that someone other than an American is the best sportsman in the world. Its sad but true, accept it. And those making "decisions" in that room probably don't know much about any sport that's not played exclusively in the U.S. I mean "World Champions" for a Baseball league? Come on folks, let's define "World" first.

Federer plays an international sport that is contested by representation from almost every country. Its unfortunate that the US sportsfans cannot think beyond domestic leagues such as NBA, NHL, NFL etc. Yes they are premier leagues, but none of the players in these leagues has individually raised the level of their sport the way Roger has. Roger Federer is Sportsman of the Year. By far the best.

One of the most heartful and sincere pieces of editorial journalism I have read in a long time, Seth (57 years)...my vote goes to Hansbrough for all the obvious reasons and because the man has actually exceeded everybody's expectation in his move to the NBA, including my own... I was born and raised in Chapel Hill and currently live about three miles from where Michael Jordan played High School, and I can honestly say that in this poll, I am unbiased.

Tebow lost the SEC Championship, so give it to the UNC Women's Soccer Coach, Anson Dorrance, who just won his 21st NCAA Division I Championship...an unprecedented achievement in any sport, by coach or player.

If we are talking about effort it should go to Hansborough, talking about talent and moral and spiritual leadership it would be Tebow. What do you use for guidelines in picking SOTY? I would want my son or daughter to look at what a Christian can do if he or she seeks God's guidance and gives Him all the credit for what is accomplished. How can you not vote for Tim Tebow?

Roger Federer!!!!! Why does the Sportsman of the Year almost always be American? Roger transcends his nationality with superb class and will most likely be the greatest tennis of all time! Not to mention his foundation which supports poor children in Africa or the fact that he regained the number one in the world status, after winning 2 grand slams this year...I don't understand your choice...

No doubt my pick for SI's Sportsman of the year is Sidney Crosby! In my opinion he is the prime example of what a leader and a man of great talent should be. He does not put on any airs or act in any way "high and mighty"; he strives to provide the best lessons for his team both on and off the ice. Furthermore, you can't forget that he is the youngest captain EVER in NHL history to win the Stanley Cup, let alone that he won the Stanley Cup in the first couple of years that he has been in the NHL. He has accomplished so much in such a short amount of time and has come so far in his career, and through it all, he manages to stay REAL and DOWN-TO-EARTH. I'd say in this day and age that that is pretty rare, and I am so proud that he is a player in my hometown. YAY, Sid! We're proud of you!!! :-)

Throughout the month SI writers offered their personal nominations for Sports Illustrated's Sportsman of the Year award with essays on SI.com. Yankees' captain Derek Jeter was named SOY on Monday.

We've passed along our nominations and named the winner, but we're interested in your picks.

Who is your choice for Sportsman of the Year?
