Because you're going to be bludgeoned with this stuff this week, I figured I'd get it out of the way early. Despite what Gators coach Urban Meyer and his players have said publicly, they have ached for a shot at Tennessee since first-year Volunteers coach Lane Kiffin accused Meyer of breaking a non-existent rule a day after national signing day in February. In case you don't remember the particulars, click the video.
That riled up the Gators, but I'll bet a shiny quarter this next video made them even madder…
For Tennessee's sake, the Vols will need to find the answers to the offensive woes that plagued them Saturday in a loss to UCLA. They showed so much promise in an opening-day win against Western Kentucky, but Saturday's debacle looked like archived footage of the Clawfense that got a Hall-of-Fame coach fired in 2008. If Kiffin's crew doesn't apply some quick fixes, the Vols could drown in The Swamp. Remember, Meyer is not a turn-the-other-cheek guy. He is a kick-a-field-goal-with-25-seconds-left-and-a-20-point-lead-against-Miami-to-rub-it-in guy. He is a call-timeout-against-Georgia-to-savor-a-shellacking-guy. And if Florida keeps chucking with a big lead, Meyer can justify the onslaught by saying he needed to get backup quarterback John Brantley some work against an SEC opponent.
It's better for the SEC and the viewing public if Tennessee makes this a game, and, in the process, restores the on-field portion of the Florida-Tennessee rivalry to its '90s luster. But if the Vols bring the mess of an offense they showed Saturday to Gainesville, the game might look like the scene one Adobe Illustrator-happy Florida fan envisioned...
