If you want to play armchair football psychologist, here’s an exercise for you. When a team loses a game it shouldn’t, go to that team’s Rivals site and read the titles of the message board threads. There really isn’t any need to read the threads; the titles are perfect encapsulations of the seething rage, bitter resignation or pleas for sanity that inevitably follow an inexplicable loss.
Here is a sampling of thread titles that appeared Saturday on the message board at Warchant.com after Florida State lost at home to South Florida:
OFFICIAL DO NOT GIVE BOBBY ANOTHER 1 YEAR CONTRACT THREAD!
FSU fans readjust your expectations
Bowden is a caricature of himself
Like a battered wife…
Jimbo did not fumble
How about www.firespetman.com (Randy Spetman is FSU’s athletic director)
This will be my last year as a booster
HCIW (Head-coach-in-waiting)=fail
How (sic) will put the for-sale sign in Bobby’s yard tomorrow
Now for the advanced course. Let’s take a look at the titles of threads posted by an SEC fan base after its team almost lost a game it shouldn’t have. These threads popped up on TigerBait.com on Saturday after LSU’s escape from Starkville.
No fire
Are we beating ourselves
We clearly have issues and it starts at the top
I am off the wagon
4 and 0 baby
I’ll take this win
It’s called parity
I’m not surprised by the FSU fans, who have been on this roller coaster for most of the decade. The Seminoles keep toying with them by showing flashes of improvement and then imploding. I was pleasantly surprised, however, by the LSU fans. While they were clearly upset, they never called for anyone to be fired, waterboarded or burned at the stake. That’s definitely a sign of maturation.
