If Florida State coach Bobby Bowden wasn't worried before, he should be now. He's apparently lost the Cowgirl.
"Bobby Bowden refusin 2 step down is like when ur grandparents refuse 2 give up their car keys," FSU superfan and former SI.com contributor Jenn Sterger tweeted Monday. "We luv u, just tired of u crashing into [stuff]!"
Sterger didn't mention whether she'll heed the call of several disgruntled FSU fans and wear a black bikini top to Saturday's game against Georgia Tech. More than likely, she'll join a larger group of FSU fans who simply don't show up to Doak Campbell Stadium.
Here is the Black Out Doak For Change Facebook group created to encourage Seminoles to embrace their inner Johnny Cash for Saturday's game. Organizers had a fancy logo for it that included some trademarked Seminoles imagery, but a cease-and-desist order from the school took care of that.
While it's highly unlikely the ESPN2 cameras will pan across a crowd gone entirely goth, it should be interesting to see how many fans do wear black as well as how many come dressed as empty seats. The fan base remains divided over whether the school should force Bowden to retire. Some want him gone after this season, while some believe he has earned the right to name his own retirement date.
While this is an interesting exercise in fan free speech, it probably isn't necessary. Reading between the lines of the comments made by FSU Board of Trustees chair Jim Smith in the Tallahassee Democrat, coach-in-waiting Jimbo Fisher should receive a power upgrade that would give him control of the program's future. That upgrade would come in the form of the contract FSU's general counsel already has begun drafting, according to Smith.
If the Seminoles get drilled by the Yellow Jackets, that process could speed up - and it won't matter how many fans wore black to the game.
