<quoted-text>@The_Guvnah: It's peculiar that someone who takes care to squeeze as much spongy, ductile, and generally inappropriate verbiage in his sports comments would put such a premium on statistics. Surely you can appreciate that there is no way to quantify the value of being disruptive and relevant on each and every play on defense. This doesn't mean we can just dismiss it. Or do you think the world's greatest grandpa is measured by hugs/year?</quoted-text>
          <commentable-sequence type="integer">56</commentable-sequence>

As I initially commented, there is no question that Suh is a tremendous player. But we're talking specifically about Andy Staples contention that Suh should win the Heisman trophy.

In that regard, yes, I do feel that it is necessary -- not sufficient, but necessary -- for a player to have some statistical claim to being the best among the couple of hundred or so players that play his position.

And yes, I can appreciate the value of being disruptive and relevant on every play on defense. The value of that sort of performance is... having a starter that does his job. That's a bare minimum expectation.

I asked for other indications, too. Is someone ELSE on Suh's team leading in TFL's or Sacks owing to Suh being double and triple teamed all the time? No? Then is he REALLY freeing up his teammates to rack up stats?

Tackles? No. In fact, Suh leads Nebraska in tackles with 32. That's enough to rank him #277 in the country! Yaaaay!

Sacks? No. Suh leads Nebraska in sacks with 3. Tying him for #49 in the country. Yaaaay!

Team stats? Well, yes, Nebraska is getting better on defense, and right now they've got the #2 scoring defense in the country. So let's look behind those numbers:

FAU scoring offense: #110
Ark St. scoring offense: #48
Va. Tech scoring offense: #20
U.La-La scoring offense: #105
Mizzou scoring offense: #31

The only top 25 offense Nebraska has played gave Nebraska it's only loss, and the two best offenses that Nebraska played against were both played in nasty, wet weather. So forgive me if I don't credit Suh with a Heisman-worthy contribution to Nebraska's #2 scoring defense rating, especially when you look at their other ratings:

Nebraska
total defense: #13
rushing defense: #33

Those numbers aren't bad, but they're not Heisman-worthy.

Also the statement that was made on his size is how BIG he is. yet he does the things that a much smaller corner or safety does on a regular basis. My point is that he is amazing and plays like it every game.
THANK YOU!

Finally, some sort of objective argument for Suh's candidacy!

Yes. That's not just impressive, it is a tremendous stat for a DT. Especially coming only half-way through the season. The next D-lineman is barely in the top 100.

I still have a big problem with his performance against Virginia Tech. It's not too far off the mark to say that Suh lost the game with those three plays I linked to above in which he was solo-blocked and still didn't get the job done, and gave up the winning points.

But still... Credit where due... Suh's pass-breakup total is so phenomenal considering the position he plays that you have to sit up and take notice.

Passing Efficiency- #3
Total Offense- #58, good enough to be 10 spots behind Zac Lee.
He is not in the top 100 in points scored or passing yards.

But he is on top of most Heisman leader boards. Why? Because he is dominate. Just like Suh. Have you watched Nebraska Play this season?

I've been working on getting a Heisman vote this season. In fact, after watching Nebraska beat Missouri on Thursday, I e-mailed my regional director again to make sure he includes my name on the list of new voters. If I had a ballot and it was due today, I know who I would vote No. 1.

Ndamukong Suh.

Suh, a senior defensive tackle Nebraska, proved again Thursday why NFL general managers covet him more than just about anyone else in the nation. And if they think Suh is the nation's most outstanding player, why shouldn't Heisman voters, who are tasked with selecting - and I'm using the Heisman committee's words here - the nation's most outstanding player?

I touted Suh for Heisman before the season began, but after Thursday I'm even more convinced he deserves consideration. Consider Suh's night Thursday. In the first quarter, he dragged down Missouri quarterback Blaine Gabbert, causing a fumble. For much of the first half, Suh blew up almost every Missouri rushing attempt, and he constantly harassed Gabbert, who was limping thanks to an ankle injury suffered when Suh sacked him.

Late in the third quarter, Suh - who had dropped into coverage - barely missed grabbing the first interception of Gabbert's career. Early in the fourth, Suh finished the job. He leaped and deflected a pass, then cradled it in his paws. Few 300-pounders on the planet are athletic enough to intercept that pass.

Suh's final statline: six tackles, one sack, one forced fumble, one interception. He also disrupted almost every play Missouri ran.

For the season, Suh leads the Cornhuskers with 32 tackles. That may not sound impressive, but a defensive tackle who leads his team in tackles, drops into coverage and picks off passes is every bit as oustanding as a 4,000-yard passer or an 1,800-yard back. The problem is that the average Heisman voter doesn't understand how much a dominant defensive tackle can change a game.

Voters often counter that quarterbacks receive an inordinate amount of votes because the ball is in their hands every play. What they fail to consider is that a player like Suh affects every play in which he participates. Opposing offensive coordinators must design game plans around him. Quarterbacks must always know where he is. Offensive linemen must double-team him, lest their quarterback suffer as Gabbert did Thursday.

So, please, Heisman committee, give me a vote. I'll do exactly as you ask and select the nation's most outstanding player.

Right now, that's Ndamukong Suh.

I've been working on getting a Heisman vote this season. In fact, after watching Nebraska beat Missouri on Thursday, I e-mailed my regional director again to make sure he includes my name on the list of new voters.
