Florida’s feel-good win against Georgia -- which clinched the SEC East for the Gators -- looked a bit uglier after video clips surfaced on YouTube late Saturday night of Gators linebacker Brandon Spikes gouging the eyes Washaun Ealey after making a tackle. The video below, which could be removed at any time, shows Spikes reaching into Ealey’s facemask with his right hand and digging down.
On his teleconference Sunday morning, Gators coach Urban Meyer said he hadn’t yet discussed the play with Spikes. “I’ll talk to him today, Meyer said. “He’s a very emotional player. If that’s the case, I’ll have a very serious talk with him.” That talk should end with Meyer suspending his best defender for Saturday's game against Vanderbilt.
If Spikes played for Ohio State or Michigan, you can be certain he’d be sitting out. The Big Ten, much like the NFL, has issued ex post facto suspensions this season. For example, the conference suspended Michigan linebacker Jonas Mouton for a Sept. 19 game against Eastern Michigan for punching Notre Dame center Eric Olsen on Sept. 12.
SEC associate commissioner Charles Bloom wrote in an e-mail that the conference has suspended players in the past, but the SEC has not delved much into individual player discipline lately. In fact, the league seems too preoccupied with coaches voicing legitimate concerns about the quality of the league’s officials to police dirty play.
Spikes may have been committing a little Old Testament-style retaliation Saturday. Earlier in the game, a Georgia player went under Spikes’ facemask, ripping off Spikes’ helmet in the process. After the play, Spikes clutched the area around his eyes in pain. If a camera also caught that play, someone should upload it as well.
That still doesn’t excuse Spikes for gouging a defenseless Ealey. Yes, things get nasty in the pile, but going for the eyes is a lowdown, dirty move. Besides, Spikes is so good that he can inflict enough pain on clean hits. He should stick to that -- beginning Nov. 14 at South Carolina.

Spikes is a thug. What else would you expect from him?

The play where Spikes' helmet fell off was not because it was "pulled off". Spikes played the 1st quarter with an unbuckled chinstrap and the helmet simply fell off. He was actually the one prolonging the play by engaging the lineman well after the play was over.

If Urban Meyer doesn't kick Spikes off the team, then Meyer should be fired. That was the most disgraceful thing I've ever seen in college football. That UGA kid could have been blinded for life for simply playing his best in a GAME. IT'S A GAME. Even the UFC doesn't allow eye-gouging. I can't wait to see Urban Meyer's true character.

One game? Come on Andy! Spikes should be suspended for the rest of the season. We'll learn a lot about Myer after this.

Let's suspend everyone that kicks, scratches, pokes, and swears on the field. After no one is left to play then we can get clubs and sticks and beat down stupid columnists with nothing better to write about...

I saw that live when I was watching the game and yes it deserves some kind of disciplinary action. as for comparing this to 'scratching, and swearing' you're out to lunch. We are talking about someone's sight here. Actually, it wouldn't be without precedent for the police and DA to treat it as a criminal matter. Criminal law doesn't ceast to apply when you walk onto a football field, hockey rink, or baseball diamond. Put the thug in jail and send a message.

You left out kicking and poking....current and former NFL players are laughing at this silly discussion we are having. If you can't take the violence of big time football switch sports (soccer maybe?) or watch the sissy football in the Ivy League. Give me a freakin' break!

You obviously are a florida fan, so let me pose another situation. What if, instead of a florida jersey, the questionable actions had been committed while wearing an alabama or florida state jersey? I seriously doubt you would sing the same tune. With that said these actions by Spikes, if purposefully done, are disgusting and he should be severely punished.

I can see most of you have never played football.... maybe it shouldn't be, but it is just part of the game, I played highschool and division 2 for a couple years and anytime you're in a pile everyone is punching and poking whatever players think they can get away with, okay maybe i shouldn't say everyone but there were always a few players in every game that played a little dirty
on another note I watched the Georgia Florida Game and Georgia seemed to be playing dirty the whole first half and they seemed to be talking a lot of trash, yes there was trash talking on both sides abut it seemed Georgia was initiating most of it.... look at how many penalties georgia had, also it did seemed that spikes was poked in the eye earlier in the game and his action may have been a retaliation.
Side note: Georgia needs to get another coach: There team has no focus, i mean when your team changes uniforms after pregame warmups, and has so many preplanned celebrations, and seems more worried about talking trash then playing football... that is a reflection on poor coaching. Georgia has the athletes to compete, it is easy to tell why they are 4-4.

Totally agree. It's the eye thing. I know in my unspectacular career I was perpetrator and victim of some unsavory stuff in a pile, but it's kind of an unwritten rule that you don't go for the eyes or anywhere else you can do permanent damage.

Dude, you want to see some serious violence...watch next Saturday when Alabama and LSU tilt?! There will be a whole lot of that stuff going on and if you think it won't be you are incredibly naive...or a soccer fan. As an Alabaman (is that a word?) I'm sure you've witnessed enough Iron Bowls (I have) where if you didn't do this when you had the opportunity, you would be benched! My point is -- as repugnant as this kind of play seems, it is a by-product of this level of play. The Oklahoma's, USC's, Alabama's, and Florida's of the world deal with it. Like I said, NFL players are laughing at this discussion.

i played highschool and a couple years D2 ball, sadly this is apart of the game and under the pile its pretty common
1.it seemed spikes may have done it as a retaliation, the action doesn't show a lot of class, which is sad especially for a guy that does play with a lot of class usually. This is really not characteristic of Spikes... and don't judge a guy just because of how "thug" like is hair looks. But yess poor judgment on his part
2. georgia needs to get a new coach: they have no focus. it seems they are more worried about changing their uniforms after their pregame warm-up and carrying out preplanned celebrations, and talking trash then playing football,
it is easy to see why they are 4-4, which is sad because they have the talent to compete.... this all reflects poor coaching and lack of disciplined.
3. Mark Richt was asked about his team being the most penalized team in the country, his response: "so were the Seminoles in the 90's, and it didn't seem to hurt them"... Mr. Richt when you win and dominate like the noles did in the 90's then can you talk all the trash and get all the unsportsmanlike penalties you want!!

Andy - you've been disrespecting the Gators since Tennessee - that's ok - they are still No. 1 with most other voters. But if you are looking for Spikes' motivation for payback, look at the 3rd down play in the 3rd quarter where Teebow is flattened by 3 Georgia defenders who lie on top of him. Teebow gets up, takes off his helmet and has to have his eyes washed out on the sideline. Give you a clue?
