Former SI writer John Walters has filed his story for FanHouse.com from a fascinating interview with Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis in the wee hours of Sunday morning. Among the revelations...
- Weis claims he makes far less than media reports have indicated. "I can promise you I don't earn $3.2 million a year," Weis told FanHouse.
- Weis' wife, Maura, did not attend Saturday's game against Connecticut. Weis said some of the personal attacks against him have done "irreparable damage" to his wife and son, Charlie Jr.
- Weis met with Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick on Nov. 17. Nothing, he said, has been finalized.
- Weis plans to coach somewhere next year - probably in the NFL.
No matter what you think of Weis as a coach, Walters' story is worth a read. Yes, Weis will walk away from South Bend with a ton of money, but he's still a man about to lose his dream job. That kind of pain can't be salved with hundred-dollar bills.
