I got a little excited this week when I read that the Wall Street Journal had tackled the topic of football recruiting rankings. So what if that makes me a geek? As the esteemed Dave Curtis of The Sporting News often says, join the club. We have jackets.
After reading the analysis of the correlation -- or lack thereof -- between the signing of highly ranked recruits and on-field success, I wanted to dig a little deeper. So I did a lot of Googling, created a spreadsheet and made a few conclusions of my own. I'm not sure if they definitively prove anything. As one reader astutely pointed out on Twitter, the only way to really get to the bottom of this is a true regression analysis. Unfortunately, that would require an army of interns to pick up my dry cleaning assist me in gathering data, and we just don't have the budget. Still, the numbers are interesting.
