Landon Donovan and the U.S. are going to South Africa next summer.

SAN PEDRO SULA, Honduras -- Three thoughts after the U.S.' 3-2 victory against Honduras in Saturday's World Cup qualifier:

• The U.S. is World Cup-bound for the sixth straight time. In one of the most remarkable halves in U.S. Soccer history, the Americans overcame a 1-0 deficit and scored three times to silence 45,000 Hondurans who were hoping to celebrate the country's biggest win in nearly three decades. Granted, Honduras isn't Brazil, but the U.S. could have folded after giving up a brutal goal in the 46th minute much like the one it allowed to Brazil in the Confederations Cup final (a 3-2 loss). Instead, the Yanks found the resolve to keep pushing and run off three unanswered strikes by Conor Casey (two) and Landon Donovan (one). If you were ever going to question the U.S.' heart, this World Cup-bound team answered those questions tonight.

The Hondurans are the chokers of CONCACAF. Amazingly, the Catrachos could have tied the game at 3-3 in the 87th minute, but Carlos Pavón sent his penalty kick over the bar after a Carlos Bocanegra hand-ball penalty in the box. If Honduras fails to reach the World Cup and it's now in fourth place headed for a playoff against perhaps Uruguay, this failure on its home field will be remembered here for decades. You might recall that Honduras was on the verge of qualifying for the World Cup on Matchday 9 at home in 2001, but it somehow lost to lowly Trinidad and Tobago 1-0 to miss a World Cup berth by three points. You have to feel for the Honduran fans, who could have used a night of exultation after their country has been going through a political crisis.

Man of the Match: Casey. There were a lot of raised eyebrows here in the press box when the U.S. lineup came out and Casey was listed at forward instead of Jozy Altidore. But Casey made Bob Bradley's gamble pay off, scoring the first two goals of his national-team career in the most important of circumstances. After a rough start dealing with aimless long balls from the U.S. back line, Casey recovered to play an important role holding the ball in the latter part of the first half. Then he lit it up in the second half, beating Honduran goalkeeper Noel Valladares to a high-ball for the 1-1 equalizer and finishing Donovan's brilliant through-ball for the 2-1 lead. Casey put an exclamation point on his breakout evening by earning the free kick that Donovan sent into the upper-right corner for the decisive goal.

What are your thoughts on the game? Please post below. This is all from me tonight since I have to write a magazine story on deadline for tomorrow.

It *read* like a really exciting game. Too bad no one here saw it - anyone know if the idiotic rules currently governing how USMNT matches are aired will be changing anytime soon?

October 11, 2009  12:13 AM ET

Thanks for tweeting the game. I'm still amazed that in this day and age, it wasn't televised in the US. Also, the US Soccer dot com match tracker system crashed, so the only way to follow was through people like you.

October 11, 2009  12:14 AM ET

Sweet, first comment. Anyway, we definitely looked shaky at the end, particularly on the wings. I'm still not sold and never will be on Bornstein (gah, he's just not that great). I was pleasantly surprised at Casey's success and as usual, unimpressed with lazy, clumsy, slow Jozy. Donovan's free kick was great, I thought.

We held and passed better in the midfield for large chunks of the 2nd half, which was encouraging. Feilhaber missed an easy chance at the end, going 1v1 with the keeper on the left side of the goal but shooting way wide, that would have iced it for us.

I would love to see Honduras make the World Cup - I'm very much rooting for them now that we're in ourselves.

GO USA!!!!

PS. The jackwads who owned the rights to this game should die in a fire. YOU SUCK for not getting it out the public and the same goes for the crappy US media corporations who stupidly didn't buy it.

October 11, 2009  12:15 AM ET

And a HUGE THANK YOU to Grant for getting us the info on Twitter until it sucked. Thank you, you rock man!

October 11, 2009  12:16 AM ET

As great of a win as this was, you have to be disappointed that it wasn't televised in the U.S (except in a few places). And people wonder why soccer hasn't taken hold in the states... I really wish I could've watched this.

But sounds like it was a fantastic game!

October 11, 2009  12:16 AM ET

I didn't think I would be able to see the game, but luckily somebody put an Al Jazeera sports link on your twitter and we were able to watch on the computer! Not the prettiest of games, but the bottom line is results and we are going to the World Cup! Quality teams find a way to win games like that and they did it. I know there are a lot of Landon haters, but he was all over this game. I had a bit of a double take when I saw Casey at the forward instead of Altidore, but I guess that is why Bradley is the coach, not me. Not the classiest of finishes, but it was sheer heart. The defense still gives me heart palpatations, but I think we are going to be ready to make some noise in South Africa!

October 11, 2009  12:16 AM ET

wow, what an exciting game! liked the USA's resolve......hopefully will lead to a great WC 2010!

October 11, 2009  12:18 AM ET

Seriously? You guys didn't see it? There must have been 6-7 feeds of the game online (of which only one actually made it to the end I think). I feel sorry for those that couldn't see the match, it was a classic.

October 11, 2009  12:20 AM ET

If you read Grant Wahl's article, it basically states that FIFA awards the rights to all WC Qualifiers to the home team. So that closed circuit firm that only had three outlets in California got it. I am sure it was some sort of back alley deal with some Honduran politician. It was the same thing for England. The England-Ukraine game was not televised in England! If any of you followed Grant's updates on Twitter, the link at the beginning went to some web site that had the game on a web cast. The resolution wasn't exactly HD, but at least we got to see it! Thank you to whoever put that up there, that was a very pleasant surprise.

October 11, 2009  12:24 AM ET

My God, what a game. I can't believe I had to sit through such a crappy feed for so long just to watch that match, but it was well worth it.

To be fair, Honduras should have AT LEAST tied that match. Tough luck.

Honduras goal #2 - how was that not offside? Not the shot into net, but the pass to the touchline. Honduran forward 1.5 body lengths behind EVERYONE on defense, and a pass from his own team. Horrible non-call from what I could see (which was, albeit, not much).

USA chance to ice the game with 5 minutes to go, US player (couldn't tell who) WALKED INTO GOAL and hit it straight when trying to bend it in the far post. Hit that goal and save me from a heart attack next time!

Pavon's missed header from inside the 6-yard box. He looked to be ahead of the ball and the US defenders, but no call. Possibly a bad camera angle on the feed, but looked offside.

October 11, 2009  12:25 AM ET

First off the match was broadcast online through Justin.tv..all you all had to do was search for it and presto it's there!

It was a crazy second half!

October 11, 2009  12:25 AM ET

My God! What a game to watch on a crappy online feed! I'm lucky that I got to see even a feed, but still, I agree with Wytefang (to some extent). FIFA needs to at least guarantee that the countries involved with the match can watch it. Honduras unlucky to not at least tie that match. Too much pressure on Pavon perhaps. I feel for the guy, that's got to feel awful. It's not like he's the only one to miss though. Roberto Baggio in the 1994 WC final, Schevshenko (sp?) in the Champions League final V. Liverpool, etc.

HON goal #2 - How was this not offside? Not the shot into goal, but the pass before that to the touchline. From what I saw, the Honduran player was 1.5 body lengths behind the entire US back line when he received the pass toward the touchline. I suppose I'd need to see the proper angle, but it sure looked like offsides, by a lot, to me.

USA could have iced it - was that Feilhaber at the end who WALKED INTO THE HONDURAN GOAL but shot wide? We all saw that he was trying to wrap the ball to the far post from the right side of goal (opened his hips up and curled it, but the ball went straight instead, and wide of goal). Good lord, please score those opportunities next time so I don't go crazy!

Honduras near equalizer - Pavon missed the header from 3 yards out, but again, he looked to be offside. He was in front of the ball and the US defenders. Maybe not the best angle, but it looked offside to me.

I wonder who's going to play against CR in the final game. This could bode well for CR, but if the USA wins, Honduras will be the benefactors. Once again, USA, Mexico in the WC. Good! I just hope the US gets a seed this time.

October 11, 2009  12:26 AM ET

Grant, first let me say Thank you for tweeting the whole game. Thanks to the internet and canal 4 in El Salvador I was able to catch the game. I am a Salvadoran fan who lives in the US. I've been cheering for the US to bring good quality soccer. I love the talent this team has but I'm very disgusted with the coaching and lack of midfield play(I will give BB some credit for the CC move). But, what happens when we play a European or South American side who can and will take Landon out of the game? where will the creativity and midfield play come from. It certainly is not Michael Bradley or Ricardo Clark. I still do not understand how MB gets 90 minutes every single game. He looks lost and has no creativity whatsoever. He doesn't even play 90 for his club team. Why not put in Torres who starts and plays almost 75-80 a game for Pachuca. He has creativity and in the El Salvador his entrance changed the game.
Although, I'm happy the US qualified and hopefully will get the #1 Concacaf draw over Mexico. I'm afraid their lack of midfield will be exposed. You can't play boomball in the World Cup. It works against the Concacaf teams due to the US strength and size. Hopefully, BB will learn and realize that there are other midfielders in the US system that can change the game.

Again, thank you for allowing us to follow the game.

October 11, 2009  12:26 AM ET

Whoops, double post after it ate my first one. Sorry about that. Noob!

October 11, 2009  12:28 AM ET

That was Feilhaber with the non-curling shot at the end. There were a couple of no-calls on off-sides that gave me heart attacks, but overall I don't think the referee was totally incompetent. Typically we get no calls playing in Central America with Central American refs. Overall I thought the calls were relatively fair. In a show of class, the Honduran fans who stayed to the end actually applauded the US team when they came off the field...zero chance of that happening at Azteca!

October 11, 2009  12:32 AM ET

i tried every feed listed and all were rated as bad reputation sites by wot!! very disappointing missing the game. thanks Grant for reporting. felt like dial up internet era.

QUOTE(#1):

FIFA gives the TV rights to the host country and Honduras couldn't reach a deal with the major networks (the likely wanted too much money) so they were sold to close circuit TV. Nothing the USMNT can do about it and the same issue occured for the England game today.

Anyone have a link to some highlights yet since all of 10 people probably got to see it live? :p

October 11, 2009  12:33 AM ET

I still think Jozy Altidore got hosed. He had some good momentum going & I think it will hurt the team in the long run. Not a good move in my opinion.

October 11, 2009  12:37 AM ET

On line @ iraqgoals.com was a good feed. Benny needs more PT. We need better forwards - even Davies stunk tonight (how does he miss both those chances from 6 yards??), Holden was great (and super fit)

October 11, 2009  12:38 AM ET

WE'RE GOING TO SOUTH AFRICA!!!! i got a feed so im happy!!! :) to tell you the truth i really couldn't concentrate too much in the 2nd half on how people were playing bc i was so nervous!!!! the only player was pavon for obvious reasons. but many of our guys played with heart tonight and that's all you can ask!!!
