Could not disagree more with the comment that we should pass on Robbie Rogers. He was a game-changer when he came in in the 70th minute, and particularly with Davies now gone, the USA needs players who can consistently fight for fifty/fifty balls, serve the ball beautifully from anywhere within the 35 including seeing guys on secondary and tertiary runs, and is probably THE BEST PLAYER - reserve or starter - on US roster when it comes to the key element of being able to reverse the field with the ball in a single pass. He has excellent field vision and like Altidore and Donovan in his prime and Dempsey when healthy ALSO can see plays three and four passes before they develop, whereas the rest of the USA squad, even though i love em, are offensively challenged to see beyond two passes ahead and thus that is why they very rarely string together passes that make people refer to this sport as the beautiful game.

Not only should we NOT pass on Rogers, I think he deserves a chance to play a full 90 on a regular basis with the A squad, not those clowns he shined above playing with our B team in the America Cup.

Scott

PS is there anything definitive yet on the Gooch injury, or is it still speculation. That sure was an ugly buckle, but I hate speculation and I would love to know some hard facts on the matter.

And Robbie Rogers definitely can't do that. Unless he bulks up considerably. That was the big complaint with him in the Gold Cup. He got knocked off the ball way too much. Until he solves that problem, he will be a fringe player. To be honest, Holden provides most of those qualities and is much stronger on the ball. I would put Donovan, Dempsey, and Holden ahead of Rogers at the winger position.

So much, I think Casey is a possession forward who can't perform on the international stage. The Honduras game was the first time I saw him play effectively and he still contributed little throughout the game (besides two very important goals). If the US is to have a chance next summer, they need to find someone else to play instead of Casey. He is fat and slow and provides very little. Right now, the forwards going to SA should be: Altidore, Dempsey (having him up top frees up a spot in the Mid), Cooper, Rodgers (with Adu and Ching in consideration)...thoughts? Altidore and Dempsey are easy, i think Rodgers brings a great spark, and Cooper is big, creative and always seems to be in the thick of the action whenever he is on the field. He finds the ball and connects well with his teammates when BB gives him the chance to play.

Before I complain, let me say that I am a longtime soccer player and fan, not one of those American soccer-haters. But I have to vent that soccer has some of the absolute most idiotic rules in all of organized sports and I have no idea how FIFA continutes to justify them. First, the 2 yellow card rule: how can an important player from a squad miss an entire game (possibly a World Cup game!) for 2 (quite often ticky-tack) fouls over the span of who knows how many games. Makes no sense!! And FIFA also needs to do something more about the diving/time wasting tactics of so many teams. It just looks ridiculous and gives my favorite sport a terrible name! Sorry to vent.

You must not be that old of a soccer fan. You should watch an old World Cup game between say???. Brazil and Italy. Back then you had to d a m n near kill anybody to get a yellow card which made weaker teams come out and foul thru the games as the only way to compete.
I once watched an interview of Gary Lineker to Maradona where he told him England came out to ???take him down??? during the 86 WC.

Anybody think Conner had a pathetic game? Yeah, he had the 2 goals at honduras but even those looked ugly. He plays soccer like a lug-headed line backer and looks like a city bus on the pitch moving around. He cant turn and face goal any better than a quadripalegic in a manual wheel-chair. Great heart shown by the entire USMNT though, loved it. Gooch had a pretty bad night as well, even without the injury. that first goal was completely his fault. He also had a bad match at Honduras. His WC2010 chances are slimming. SOOOOO much has changed for US soccer this year...

The two-yellow card rule is one of the foundations of soccer. if you eliminate that, you will have anarchy on the pitch, and too many hard fouls. Sometimes you get one ticky-tack yellow, but refs are aware that the second yellow on a player needs to be a clear yellow. I agree with you in terms of time wasting and diving, but that has become part of the game and eliminating it at this point is almost impossible

WASHINGTON -- Three thoughts after the U.S.' 2-2 tie with Costa Rica in the final Hexagonal game of World Cup qualifying:

• The U.S. does not know how to give up. Down 2-0 midway through the second half, the Americans scored twice in the final 23 minutes, capped by Jonathan Bornstein's stunning 95th-minute header, to secure a remarkable tie. The comeback forced Costa Rica into a playoff with Uruguay next month and catapulted Honduras (a 1-0 winner at El Salvador) into its first World Cup since 1982. In a week when the U.S. was shocked by the tragic auto accident involving forward Charlie Davies, this was only a sporting moment. But it was a special one which called to mind the U.S.' amazing comeback against Egypt in June's Confederations Cup. If the U.S. is to go on a deep run in South Africa next year, it will need to continue having this kind of never-quit attitude, which is infectious.

• René Simões went mental. I was just about ready to hail Costa Rica's new Brazilian coach for being the Ticos' Mr. Fix-It when he lost his mind in the final minutes, complaining to the fourth official and drawing a red card. Simões' antics mean that he'll be suspended for Costa Rica's first playoff game against Uruguay next month. If you're a Costa Rica fan right now, you have to be upset over how your team went from first place to fourth in only four games.

• Oguchi Onyewu's injury looked scary. The hulking U.S. defender left the field after going down with an alarming non-contact injury in the 83rd minute. We'll have to wait for a postgame injury report, but Gooch was extremely agitated on the field after falling down awkwardly in the Costa Rica box going up for a header.

What are your thoughts after the game? Please post them below, and check back later for a post-interviews piece.
