Trevon Hughes put 26 points in Wisconsin's win over Duke. (AP)
Here's your Wednesday morning box score read. I read ‘em so you don't have to:
- Wisconsin 73, Duke 69: Kyle Singler was terrific: 28 pts, 6 rebs, 3 assts, 7-7 FT. Nolan Smith was not: 13 pts, 5-17 fg, 2-2 FT. Best player on the floor was Wisconsin PG Trevon Hughes, who had 26 pts (4-7 3fg), 2 assts. Jon Leuer 17 pts, Jason Bohannon 10 pts but 0-6 on 3fg. Best number in Wisconsin's box was total turnovers: 4. (That is not a typo.) Badgers also had 17 assists on 26 made field goals. Think this guy Bo Ryan can coach a little?
- Ohio State 77, Florida State 64: Buckeyes not much for depth; three starters played all 40 minutes. (Common theme in college hoops this year.) Evan Turner once again brilliant: 25 pts (10-17 fg), 13 rebs, 6 assists, 5 turnovers. Jon Diebler 6-12 3fg, 22 pts. William Buford still MIA: 5 pts, 1-12 fg. Buckeyes were out-rebounded by 7 and shot 15-26 FT (57.7%). For FSU, Solomon Alabi had 21 pts and 10 rebs, but Chris Singleton was horrible: 3-10 fg (0-3 3fg), 6 turnovers, 5 fouls in 25 minutes (though he did have 8 rebs). Seminoles' perimeter will be problem all season. They shot 2-16 3fg and committed 20 turnovers.
- Illinois 76, Clemson 74: Illini shot 51.9% fg but just 63.6% from the foul line. Mike Davis 22 pts, 9-11 fg, 9 rebs, 2 assts. Freshman guard Brandon Paul 20 pts (6-12 fg), 5 rebs, 3 assts, 3 steals. Demetri McCamey just 2 pts but had 7 assists, 3 turnovers. Illini got just six points off bench to Clemson's 22. Tigers done in by poor shooting in giving up 23-point lead: Point guard Demontez Stitt 15 pts, 4-11 fg. Trevor Booker 12 pts, 10 rebs. David Potter a non-factor: 8 pts, 2-8 fg. Clemson had just 11 total assists on 24 made fgs.
- Gonzaga 74, Washington State 69: Against a good team, Klay Thompson was mortal: 6-21 fg (0-4 3fg) for 15 pts. DeAngelo Casto had 10 rebs and 10 pts, and overall Wazzu shot 12-20 FT and had just 8 assists. For the Zags, Matt Bouldin went 7-12 on 3fg for 28 pts, freshman Elias Harris had 24 pts (8-11 fg, 8-9 FT) and 12 rebs. Good sign that Kelly Olynyk had 10 pts, 7 rebs in 22 minutes off the bench - he had been very quiet lately. Zags were efficient across the board: 48.0% fg, 43.8% 3fg, 21-29 FT.
- Georgia Tech 74, Siena 61: Breakout game for Jackets freshman guard Mfon Udofia: 26 pts, 5-8 3fg, 7 rebs, 3 assists. Other guards, not so much: D'Andre Bell and Iman Shumpert combined for 7 pts, 6 turnovers, 3-12 fg, 0-0 FT. Derrick Favors 16 pts, 8 rebs. Saints, who were playing without injured best player, Edwin Ubiles, shot 4-28 from three. That doesn't work on the road. Also lost battle of the boards 42-34. Clarence Jackson 19 pts on 6-24 shooting (3-14 3fg).
- Pittsburgh 67, Duquesne 58 (2 OT): Four Panthers scored in double figures but shooting was woeful: 33.9% fg, 25.0% 3fg, 54.8% FT. Ashton Gibbs 15 pts on 3-15 fg (3-12 3fg). Panthers were plus-10 on the boards. Duquesne had even worse shooting night: 31.8% fg, 9-33 3 fg, 7-14 FT. Bill Clark led Dukes with 23 pts on 6-14 3fg.
- Villanova 77, Drexel 58: For Nova, solid night for Antonio Pena, who is even more important with Mouphtaou Yarou out: 19 pts, 11 rebs, 11-16 FT. Scottie Reynolds 14 pts (4-7 3fg, 6-8 FT), Taylor King 16 pts off bench, but Corey Fisher just 5 pts on 1-6 fg.
- Kansas 98, Alcorn State 31: Xavier Henry (5-10 3fg) and Sherron Collins (5-12 3fg) lead KU with 18 pts each. Freshman Thomas Robinson 15 pts, 10 rebs in 18 minutes off the bench.
- Tennessee 78, East Tennessee State 66: Scotty Hopson needed 14 shots to score 10 points, did not take a single free throw. Weak! Bobby Maze 5 assists, 0 turnovers. Nine Vols played 12-plus minutes, but UT only shot 15-24 FT.
- Miami 63, Minnesota 58: Keep an eye on UM freshman guard Durand Scott: 20 pts, 5 rebs, 4 steals, 3 assists. Malcolm Grant 16 pts (4-7 3fg) off the bench. Dwayne Collins' 11 rebounds helped Canes out-rebound Gophers 32-23. Eight Minnesota player scored, but Lawrence Westbrook (11 pts) was only one in double digits. Gophers might have won had they not gone 7-15 from the foul line.
- Boston College 62, Michigan 58: When Wolves don't make threes, they don't beat good (or even mediocre) teams. Michigan was 9-34 from 3fg: Manny Harris 1-6, Laval Lucas-Perry 0-3, Stu Douglass 2-7. BC destroyed ‘em on the boards 41-26. For Eagles, Corey Raji 24 pts, 11-16 fg; Joe Trapani 11 pts, 12 rebs; Reggie Jackson 15 pts, 8 rebs, 6 assts. BC only shot 27.3% from three, but they also only attempted 11 shots from behind the arc. That's called knowing your identity.
- Vanderbilt 89, Missouri 83: Vandy won game at foul line (outscored Mizzou 26-16) and on the boards (45-24), though Commodores also committed a ghastly 24 turnovers. A.J. Ogilvy was 11-12 on FT and had 25 pts. Jeffery Taylor 18 pts, 11 rebs, 8-9 FT. Andre Walker game-high 12 rebs. For Tigers, Kim English needed 17 shots to score 20 pts.
- New Mexico 86, Cal 78: Bears are still without Theo Robertson and sinking fast. They got out-rebounded by 9 and allowed New Mexico to shoot a whopping 35 free throws. That means Lobos outscored Cal 27-12 from the foul line. Jamal Boykin 21 pts, Jerome Randle 20 pts, Patrick Christopher 15 pts. Max Zhang got start at center but only played 16 minutes. Darrington Hobson led way for New Mexico with 22 pts and 15 rebs.
- UNLV 74, Arizona 72: Were there bubbles on the baskets? Teams went a combined 9-48 on 3fg. (Why take so many when they're not going in?) Even in loss, Wildcats can take heart from another fine performance by freshman forward Derrick Williams: 28 pts on 10-15 fg and 8-12 FT. (He also had 25 pts and took 21 free throws in loss at Wisconsin.) Nic Wise added 19 pts on 12-12 FT. For Rebels, Tre'Von Willis led the way with 25 pts. Kentucky transfer Derrick Jasper is still one of best rebounding guards in nation: 7 rebs, 5 assists, 12 pts.
- Portland State 86, Portland 82: Looks like Pilots' stay in top 25 will be a short one. Robin Smeulders had 20 pts on 7-11 fg; Nik Raivio went 0-5 from 3fg and had 17 pts. Portland couldn't overcome bad D: Vikings shot 52.7% fg, 60.0% 3fg (15-25).
