DANA POINT, Calif. -- Padres general manager Kevin Towers is working hard to try to trade star pitcher Jake Peavy, and an executive with another team said he believed Towers would like to find a trade for Peavy before the full free-agent period begins Nov. 14. That's when the market floods with more pitching stars like CC Sabathia, A.J. Burnett, Derek Lowe, Ben Sheets, Ryan Dempster and Oliver Perez.

Another executive with an NL team said he saw the Braves and Cubs as the two favorites. While Braves GM Frank Wren said he won't part with top pitching prospect Tommy Hanson, the Braves probably match up the best with the Padres since they have two good young middle infielders, Yunel Escobar and Kelly Johnson. The Padres are thinking about trading slick-fielding shortstop Khalil Greene, who slumped last year, so a new middle infielder would make sense. They also want a top young starting pitcher.
The San Diego Union-Tribune reported that Towers and Cubs GM Jim Hendry went golfing here in the last few days. The Cubs would like to re-sign Dempster, their own free-agent pitcher, but are often a team willing to step out and take a chance. The Dodgers, Cardinals and Astros are also on Peavy's preferred list, but the Dodgers would have to pay a premium since Peavy's in their division, the Astros don't have the right prospects and there's no buzz on a Cardinals deal here.
Peavy has said if the NL possibilities are exhausted and there's no other choice, he might consider the Angels or Yankees. But neither team seems at all likely, and a Yankees official said they don't believe they are in the Peavy Sweepstakes right now.

IF the Astros throw Pence out there I don't know how the Padres could say no to a package with him in it.

The Yankees should make a strong push for Peavy...Offer a package of Hughes, Cano, and Melky Cabrera for Peavy. Sign O. Hudson for 2nd. They'll sign Sabathia as expected, and get Teixiera. Convince Mussina to come back. Resign Abreu. Starters: Sabathia, Peavy, Wang, Chamberlain, Mussina...that is a solid rotation they need for the playoffs. Lineup: CF Damon, SS Jeter, RF Abreu, 3B Rodriguez, 1B Teixiera, DH Matsui, LF Nady, C Posada, 2B Hudson.

Ya mean, that's all the Yankees have to do this offseason? That's asking an awful lot, not to mention that the Yankees aren't one of the three favorite/finalists for Peavy who has a full no-trade clause.
Peavy is staying in the NL, sorry JAnderson_24, but your Yankees are going to have to overpay, grossly, too, to get CC Sabathia to save their rotation.

The Cubs have no shot ... Peavy wants to get out of a losing franchise not to go to another one.

Yeah he wants to go to a great sports town like Houston!...If Jordan didn't leave for two years Houston would still have no major professional sports championships!...I've been to Houston...pretty ghetto!

Yeah he wants to go to that Texas ghetto known as Houston!...Not exactly a sports town either...The only reason you have any championships is because Jordan was forced to take a two year break...Baseball?...Football?...Terrible sports town!

MLB.COM.... Padres asked Braves for Tommy Hanson & Yunel Escobar, which Braves said are untouchable. Now, the Padres & YANKEES are putting together a package for Phil Hughes, Ian Kennedy, and Austin Jackson (type A minor league outfielder). This would give the Yankees full rights to restructure Peavy's contract similar to that of Johan Santana. The Yankees would then ditch Teixiera, sign Orlando Hudson, move Cano to 1st and focus their attention to CC and Burnett. C.C. Sabathia, Jake Peavy, Joba Camberlian, AJ Burnett, Andy Pettitte. J_Anderson24.... hate to break it to you buddy... but the Yankees are not re-signing Abreu. They already have Melky, Damon, Nady, and Matusi in the outfield. Padres have already said they do not want Cano because he has 3 years - $25 million which they can not afford. Yes, they will sign Hudson, but move Cano to 1st and save $120-6 years on Teixiera to go after AJ Burnett.
