This stuff DOESN'T work. Attempting to sign high profile FAs is a WASTE OF TIME for a team this bad. The Lerners are merely attempting to put on a show for the fans knowing full well they don't have a prayer at these guys who will use their offers to raise the price they'll ultimately get from contenders.

Why does heyman hate jim bowden? Did JimBo not return his call once in a timely manner? Every piece he writes mocks the Nats.

Cash is king baby. The only reason Texeria won't be a nat is Uncle Teddy's wallet won't open that wide. Free agents won't go to 100 loss teams? Remind me again who was the worst team in baseball in 2007? Would that be your American League 2008 champion Rays?

And of course, the last thing any team needs is a guy with a .370 OBP and .500 SLG in the middle of their order (and he hits as well on the road as he does at the Great American bandbox.) With Johnson, Dunn and Dukes hitting in front of him Ryan Zimmerman would go to arbitration next year with 150 RBI's on his resume.

And please, "clogging up the bases?" Head on over to the Earl of Baltimore's Managers Corner for a through debunking of that tired chestnut.

He hits a lot of home runs, strikes out a lot, drives in a lot of runs, hits into double plays, walks a ton, is a leader in the clubhouse, doesn't carry "baggage", but will be expensive.

With the team the Nats fielded last year...don't complain. If you want to work on fielding a good team in 4 years...go fo it! But as a Pirates fan...be happy your team is being mentioned in this board. Pirates ownership hasn't ponied up money in years.

I think the Nationals should forget about Adam Dunn even though he can hit some monster home runs. He strikes out a lot, hits into double plays, and will cost a lot of money. The money is better spent on player development - the Nationals need to develop talent through their farm system. Think long-range, not just 2009!

I can't stomach the sight of another ex-Red on the team. (How have the rest worked out?) It's called diversification.

Sadly, Dunn was a Red, he is an outfielder, and he also was a Diamondback. That's +++ in Bowden's book. See you in Spring Training, Adam!

DANA POINT, Calif. -- While the Nationals are making some noise here by chasing several big-time players such as Matt Holliday, Mark Teixeira, A.J. Burnett and Adam Dunn, most competing executives say that Washington doesn't have the pieces to make a Holliday trade and few star free agents would sign with a team that lost 102 games. The one that may, several execs agree, is Adam Dunn, but only if the Nationals overpay for him. Nationals GM Jim Bowden has had ties to Dunn going back to their days with the Reds together. "Bowden has an infatuation,'' one competing exec said.
