I agree that this might be a cost-effective move for the Yankees. The Red Sox have reduced payroll in recent years by drafting well and making trades for solid role players. The Yankees had the three highest paid players in baseball last year, and Giambi and Jeter were certainly not worthy of that status. I think they'd be smart to spend carefully.

Regarding pitching... The last time Sabathia threw as many innings as he did this past season, he started off the year pretty poorly (he was 5-8 with the Tribe)... I think the Yankees would be better suited going after Burnett, since he's proven he can pitch well against the other teams in the division. The Yanks will get Wang back next year, and can sign Andy to a 1 year deal (and Moose, if he doesn't retire). That leaves room for Hughes or Chamberlain, or Ben Sheets, who might be too high risk for Cashman, but would be less expensive.

ok realistically we wont get sabathia, burnett, and tex. Id love to have all three but I believe were still worried about posada, and swisher will cover 1st until we see how that plays out. Could need posada a position for the year if he cant throw! BUT our new stadium needs the world series win you know the owners and anything could happen after we saved all the money on the stadium taxes for the year I think theu banked that aside to make sure we got ourselves the series this year. Who knows maybe well get them all and hash all the stuff out next year when were sitting hall of fame guys out cause theres no room to start them all.

Yanks have $90M coming off the books, but Red Sox have $65M coming off and are certainly going to be a player for Texiera. As much as I would hate to see Lowell go, I'm afraid we have to do something about a C and BCRedSox's post makes a lot of sense.

wow... i have read these messages and i'm starting to think that every FA available will be good for the yanks to get... Matsui for Zito... wow... Matsui is OLD... noone will want him regardless... .damon CANT THROW... that would be a nice addition to anyones OF... I'm an Orioles fan and IMO the yanks need to get younger and need pitching. the past 2 years the injuries are piling up.. joba 'starts' for one month and has shoulder stiffness. hopefully, that isnt a sign of things to come. swisher is ur guy at first for 3 years.. then, like someone else mentioned, jeter will move there.

The Yankees need a first baseman. Swisher at .219 is not the answer. Teixeira is proven .300 hitter, gold glove winner, HR hitter, RBI man, and is only 28. Plus he is a switch hitter

The Yankees are not immune to a recession. Wiser companies have failed (Lehman, Merril, etc.). Swisher is a financially prudent, efficient, and flexible move. He plays multiple positions (LF/CF/RF/1B), is under contract for 3 years at reasonable total value (under $25 million), and he's better than average defensively at each position he plays as well as a decent hitter with power and upside.

They'll make a big offer to CC, but they are not going to get played against many other teams just to drive up the contract value. My guess is they give CC a deadline after their second offer, then move on, as they can get 2 pitchers for his expected annual value of $20-$25 million/year.

Despite signing Marte to a 3-year deal, and having Rivera under contract for 2 more seasons, I could see the Yankees going after a Kerry Wood or Treavor Hoffman to add bullpen depth as the 8th inning setup guy. That being said, they don't HAVE to do this, as they finally have talented and significant depth in their minor league system.

The backlog in the outfield has to be addressed though. Matsui, Damon, Nady, Gardner, Cabrera, with Swisher as an option is just far too many. If I were Cashman, I'd do something bold: Trade bags of balls for bags of bones. Matsui for Zito, with SF picking up half of his annual contract. Gets Zito out of SF, where's he's been abyssmal, frees up some salary for them, and gets them a LF for at least 1 year - if he's healthy. If not, they still get Zito out of town. Yankees get a lefty pitcher with AL experience, who has upside (can't have any more downside), and they start to unclog their OF/DH situation.

If this is Cashman's idea for the First base solution, then the next guy we need to get rid of is Cashman! So let's see: Posada and Wang are big maybes, A-Rod is on the prowl staying up all hours, Jeter, Rivera, Damon, Mussina and Pettitte are on the decline. We've got Swisher and are about to sign an overweight overextended overpriced younger version of Bartolo Colon who has never had to deal with 'New York.' All I can say is there's a stink in the air and it smells like 3rd place!!!

They have the cash and the prospects this year. Go get Peavy, and give them what they want. He is young ,a work horse, and healthy. Sign Manny, and Tex. Manny is a playoff guy. God knows we need that! Just keep him at DH. Tex is young, gold glover with a bat. No brainer!! Deffense is what the Yanks have lacked at first for years now. Get C.C. because he's the best the market has to offer, and the fact he is an upgrade from anyone of the starters we have now. Why not make a play for K-Rod. He can close some or set up MO some. Then eventually take over. If you throw enough cash at him he will do what it takes to win. That solves pitching, hitting, and Deffense. Lastly, try to move Damon. He still has a great bat, so someone will kick the tires. The Yanks could pay his salary to help the deal out. Cody Ransom is the real deal. Keep him on the bench. And promote Jackson to play center. This kid has skills. Let him play. The rest of the line up will help him take the time to develop. Just like a young player brought up back in the day named Jeter. That is going to bring a the world series trophy back where it belongs!!!!

Now that they've acquired first baseman/outfielder Nick Swisher in a trade with the White Sox, the Yankees are focused on free-agent starters CC Sabathia, Derek Lowe and A.J. Burnett, which means they are not as likely to be players for superstar free agent first baseman Mark Teixeira.

Teixeira, like Sabathia, is expected to command a salary north of $100 million. Players can sign with new teams as of tomorrow.
