Yankees GM Brian Cashman has been busy handing out the money -- or trying to hand it out, anyway. After presenting an offer of about $140 million over six years to superstar free agent pitcher CC Sabathia, Cashman reached out to the agents for star free agent pitchers A.J. Burnett and Derek Lowe. It is believed Cashman also extended the offer on his Quarter Billion Dollar Tour -- the approximate combined amount of the potential offers to the three pitchers -- to Burnett's agent, Darek Braunecker, but it was still uncertain whether he reached Lowe's agent, Scott Boras.

Sabathia's agent, Greg Genske, heard the Yankees' bid, and didn't immediately accept. Sabathia was said to be in Las Vegas over the weekend participating in a gold and poker tournament for sports stars.

It's not known what the Yankees are offering Burnett and Lowe. My guesses of $75 million for five years and $56 million for four, respectively, were said to be incorrect, so they are being secretive about those proposals. The reason for that isn't known, but it's probably not related to the reaction to their bid for Sabathia from Brewers general manager Doug Melvin, who wondered aloud in a story in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel why the Yankees didn't bid $110 million after the Brewers were reported to have proposed $100 million.

The main reason for that, of course, is that the Yankees don't view the Brewers as their main competition for Sabathia, who prefers to pitch in California if all things are equal. West Coast teams the Dodgers, Angels and possibly Giants are considered potential bidders.
