The Giants made a nice start in the free-agent market by signing useful lefthanded reliever Jeremy Affeldt for $8 million over two years. But could they be a player again for one of the biggest free-agent prizes?
They definitely are thinking about a run at one of the big three, meaning superstar pitcher and Bay Area native CC Sabathia or first baseman extraordinaire Mark Teixeira or hitting savant Manny Ramirez. One person familiar with the Giants thinking said that while their need is definitely for offense, their preference among the big three "bounces around'' between the star trio.
The chances for the Giants to make a play still aren't seen as great, not unless they can find a taker for Barry Zito, their free-agent mistake from two years ago. If the Giants can find someone to take a good portion of the remainder of Zito's $126-million, eight-year contract, their chances to play for one of the big three would improve significantly.

This guy seems a little bit crazy to me. I've only read a little bit of his stuff, but one report was littered with type-o's (come on... it's your JOB) and the second suggested that a team take on a large portion of Zito's contract. I'm not sure which is more absurd. "mike1196" the Giants have repeatedly said that Matt Cain is "untouchable" so I don't see that deal going down. Besides.... if Zito can't hack it anymore in the NL West, why would he do any better against the stacked lineups of the AL East. Sorry Giants.... almost as bad as the Braves-Mike Hampton deal (at least Zito is pitching).

With a fifth starter in question and Jonathan Sanchez as primary trade bait, the Giants can only give up Zito if they can get Sabathia. The only team desperate enough AND rich enough to afford taking Zito is the Yankees. The Yankees are still the likeliest destination for Sabathia. Which former AL Cy Young winner would the Yankees rather have: Barry Zito or CC Sabathia? The answer should be clear, unless Baby Stein has W. complex with his own daddy George.

I know Sabean has made decisions that are totally moronic, as have the GIANTS front office that gave him a contract extension ... but if he did this deal that you are putting out here, then Sabean would be sea gull food at the end of a Giants home game !

Thee is no way the Giants are going to shift these two pitchers as Cain is always a possibility in the win column and as for Zito, I would venture that the Giants think , yes think ( lost word in the Giant Dictionary) he may just turn into a reasonable pitcher.
Now if you mention The Super Manny to San Francisco , that is a fit
1. The Giants will pay for a hitter as they know he will put meat in the seats.
2. The public and the pathetic San Francisco Chronicle will court him.
3. The Giants might well possibly want Manny up in Northern California so they can out 2 fingers in the face of the Dodgers

Swisher is a calculated risk...his short career holds promise and he is a young, gritty, hard-nosd player who can hit for power and get on base... Zito is an over-priced lefty who has yet to earn $1 of his $126MM. Apples and corn...Cashman has "cash" but he is not a moron. Giants still want Hideki?
