That is only one factor to look at. Abreu wants a multi-year dael. He is a very patient hitter but he does not help the Yankees to get any younger. In addition, Matsui has only one year left on his contract. For the Yankees to compete in the AL East, they must get younger.

I am a die hard Yankee fan who has gotten sick and tired of Cashman deals. We could have had Santana for Hughes, Kennedy and Melky. Would you take that deal now? How about Igawa..did you like that deal? I like Gardner in center, but we need some more power elsewhere to do that and Tex
would be the answer, but I see the Yanks going a different direction.

Okay, this is what annoys the heck out of me. Let's say Hughes, and Kennedy both went 15-10, 12-8 respectively with a mid-3 ERA. We wouldn't be having this conversation...hindsight is 20 20 my friend. On the other hand, let's say we make that deal and Santana has an average year, and Hughes/Kennedy has a good year with the Twins. Everyone would be complaining that we gave up too much, and we signed him to an obsurd amount of money. So don't give me that BS.
I admit Igawa was just a knee-jerk reaction to Boston getting Dice-K, and is a total bust.
Hopefully we can sway C.C, and outbid Boston on A.J, then we can focus on adding offense.

The Yanks would be better with the lineup I've selected. They have $88 million off the books, plus the new Yankee stadium can help boost payroll by an addition $20-25 million per year with the extra seats and the bumped up prices. The Yanks can afford a payroll of $225 million easily. With Sabathia, Burnett, Teixiera, and Ramirez, it'll cost about $100 million per. $88 million off the books, plus an additional $12 million from the expanded revenue will help put the winningest team on the field at the new Yankee Stadium.

Pitching:
Sabathia
Wang
Chamberlain
Burnett
Mussina

Hitters:
Damon (CF)
Jeter (SS)
Teixeira (1B)
Rodriguez (3B)
Ramirez (LF)
Cano (2B)
Nady/Swisher (RF)
Matsui/Swisher (DH)
Posada (C)

No guarantees on CC, although AJ will probably jump at his offer. Well what do you think, Yankee fans? Is it the making of a championship? Smells like 3rd place to me.

If the reason of letting Abreu go is that he is old, then lets go young all the way! Why not get rid of Damon and Matsui as well. Keep Nady and move him to right, Give the Jackson kid a shot in center, and use Swish in left. Then you can sign Manny for DH, and Tex to play first. Manny will win in NY. Just to stick it to the sox. He will take the attention off A-rod and help him hit too.

Ok if the yanks dont get Manny,Texeira,or Ibnaz, we will need Abreu he doeesnt get boos when he slumps because he gets write out of them. hes a constant .30o average 15-20 homers and 100 rbis an he walks all the time. If he comes back 14 homeruns 115rbis and a 304 average

No we wont because we are going to have C.C., Burnett, Joba, Wang, and Lowe. Only going to need 3 runs per game.

Burnett is not an answer! He's another Pavano! The Yanks want to give the guy $80 Mill! The guy will be hurt within the first month. Wang is not going to have an ERA less than 4, and Joba needs to go back to the pen. We cannot afford to lose him to injury again. If they are going to give him a pitch count every time out, why not just let him pitch 1, the 8th. Sign c.c., lowe, get Peavy at any price!! Younger, and all workhorses. We need pitchers that can get us to Joba and Mo!

The Yankees have decided to offer star outfielder Bobby Abreu arbitration, people familiar with their thinking tell SI.com. However, it remains more likely that he will sign elsewhere as a free agent.

The Yankees are in fact very likely making the offer with the anticipation he will sign with another team, and should that occur they will net two draft choices as Abreu is a Type A free agent. Abreu would stand to make about $16 million in arbitration after making that much last year after the Yankees picked up a one-year option to retain him and he hit .296 with 20 home runs, 100 RBIs and 100 runs. That marked the eighth time Abreu scored at least 100 runs and seventh time he drove in at least 100.

Abreu is said to be seeking a three-year deal. The Cubs and Mets are seen as among the most likely suitors for Abreu.
