As a Yanks fan, I personally would not want Peavy. Two reasons, he pitches in the worst division on baseball (if not, one of the worst)...he would be coming to the AL East, one of the toughest in baseball. And second, he is a max out pitcher on every pitch. His motion is all arm, and he exerts tremendous amount of stress on his arm. (elbow caused him to miss a few starts in '08) He's still young (27) but for the cost, I would pass.

Braves GM Frank Wren bowed out of the long-running trade talks involving Padres star pitcher Jake Peavy a few days ago, but Wren didn't appear to completely shut the door on Peavy and at least one National League executive said he still believes the Braves remain the most likely destination for Peavy.

"He'll wind up a Brave or Padre,'' that exec predicted.

Before dropping out for now, the Braves are believed to have talked to the Padres about sending them a multi-player package of shortstop Yunel Escobar, outfield prospect Gorkys Hernandez, either of pitchers Charlie Morton or Jo-Jo Reyes and reliever Blaine Boyer.

Most of the Padres' trade talks have been with the Braves and Cubs, but the Padres don't especially love what Chicago is offering and the Cubs' deal to send pitching prospect Jose Ceda to the Marlins for reliever Kevin Gregg further inhibits the Cubs' chances, according to people familiar with the Peavy talks. Ceda is a former Padre farmhand who is well-regarded.

Padres GM Kevin Towers told MLB.com he'd probably have to involve "a third or fourth team'' to consummate a trade with the Cubs. Plus, the Cubs also appear on the verge today of re-signing star pitcher Ryan Dempster, which should lessen their need for Peavy.

The Braves are also reportedly looking at free agent starters Derek Lowe and A.J. Burnett but aren't necessarily viewed as a favorite to outbid the Yankees for Burnett or either New York team for Lowe.

Peavy has a full no-trade clause and has told agent Barry Axelrod he much prefers to stay in the NL, and although the Padres have been hopeful to include a few AL teams in the talks, they don't appear to have the go-ahead yet. Towers had hoped Peavy might OK the Yankees, but baseball officials view a deal with the Yankees as a major long shot since it's believed Peavy might ask to rework his contract upward from $63 million over four years to go to New York and the Yankees are now concentrating on free agents CC Sabathia, Burnett and Lowe.
