The agent for star free-agent pitcher A.J. Burnett is telling teams they're only considering offers of five years or more, according to league sources. Burnett is drawing interest from several teams, including at least the Yankees, Braves, Nationals and Orioles, and possibly also the Red Sox.

The Yankees were intending to make a four-year offer this week but have been shut out by the five-year demand. One person familiar with their talks suggested the sides are talking "parameters,'' but it isn't believed the Yankees have said the two magic words: five years.

You'd have to be crazy.

November 19, 2008  06:05 PM ET

No way the Braves are considering this... dear god I hope not.

November 19, 2008  06:18 PM ET

Heck you can't blame him for asking. I don't think he is worth 5 years but it is not my money.

November 19, 2008  06:19 PM ET

I am a die hard Yankee and want Burnett as bad as anyone... but 5 years??? I was thinking more like 4 years $66 mill with a 5th year option

I feel the same way, 4 years is even pushing it. Maybe 4 years 70 Million, and 5th year option, with a 5 Million buyout. That way if and when the Yankees buy him out for the 5th year, it'll average out to $18.75 Million over the 4 years.

November 19, 2008  06:26 PM ET

I hope the Yankees give him 5-6 years with big big big money and he breaks down after two starts. that would serve them and the rest of baseball right.

I think Burnett is one of the most talented arms in the A.L. but he is too fragile and always hurt. I wouldn't give him 4 years guaranteed. Maybe 3 but probably two with an option.

Go Angels!!!!!!

November 19, 2008  06:34 PM ET

So essentially he's saying doesn't want to pitch again until 2013? If teams really want their money's worth, sign him to a 1 yr contract. This guy is a scam - he only shows up to the team in his contract year and even then, he tried to weasle his way to the Cubs while the Jays were in the playoff hunt. What a waste of talent.

November 19, 2008  06:37 PM ET

Why do you guys wants Burnett so badly?

1. He'll be 32 with a history of injuries. Signing him through age 36, let alone 37, is beyond idiotic.

2. In his 8 year career, he has only exceeded 200 innings pitched 3 times (and 2 of those years were contract years).

3. He had a 4.07 ERA last year and a 1.342 WHIP (for comparison, Wakefield had an ERA of 4.17 and a WHIP of 1.18 last year). Those numbers don't scream $16-17.5 million per year to me.

But, I guess, desperate times call for desperate measures.

November 19, 2008  07:17 PM ET

Desperate times call for desperate measures and we need starting pitching. And Lots of it.

November 19, 2008  07:26 PM ET

I am all for A.J Burnett maybe im biased. (he is my favorite pitcher!) But it comes down to we need the pitching and in my opion A.J has the best quote on quote "STUFF" in MLB. Yes, I know he only turns it on for big games but i think he has electric stuff and in big games I want him on my team. I mean hes better then Sid Ponson and Darrel Rasner. ( who is in japan now)

November 19, 2008  07:33 PM ET

No doubt.

But do you honestly think signing CC and Burnett and Lowe to huge deals will solve the problem? What percentage of big-time free agent pitching signings actually work out for the life of the contract? I'd say it's easily less than 50%.

Recent history off the top of my head:
Zito - Bust.
Santana - Good
Hampton - Bust
Schmidt - Bust
Pedro - Bust

Add the New York factor into it, and you're probably down to less than 20%.

I mean, I don't really have a better solution. But going for the biggest names on the market hasn't worked in the past. I just wonder if teams will ever learn.

November 19, 2008  07:36 PM ET

Don't do it. He will be on the DL at some point next year. You would think the Yankees would have learned their lesson by now. Why don't they bring back Carl Pavano next year?

November 19, 2008  07:38 PM ET

No trust me im right there with your points, but Burnett is worth a risk over living with what we have and it is not in for sure we will get CC anyway. I liek the Swisher move we need to get more role players as far as position players go. But i have no issue spending the money on starting pitching. And Mussina was a good long term deal also.

November 19, 2008  07:42 PM ET

Besides pitching, Yankees need clutch hitting. Do you think they can win games 2-1 all the time? Yankees do not have a lot of clutch hitters. Give me Pedroia over ARod any day of the week with RISP. Sign CC, then get Manny and Tex. Stay away from Lowe and Burnett...too old.

November 19, 2008  07:43 PM ET

Yeah, Mussina was good. And, yeah, you're probably right. The risk of Burnett is one you guys have to take considering what you guys currently have. And, like I said. I don't really have any alternatives (although I wonder if Tampa Bay would deal Edwin Jackson or Sonnenstein to a division rival. Probably not.)

I have to say, the silence on the CC front is really interesting. It's been over a week now since the offer was made. Melvin said that he expected to hear from CC today to let them know if the Brewers were still in it. I'm thinking CC REALLY would rather not pitch in NY and is waiting to see if any west coast team's offer is close.

November 19, 2008  07:46 PM ET

Call me naive, but I just can't imagine the Yankees adding 2 (let alone 3) $20+ million dollar guys this year. I know they're determined to get back to the post-season, but I think that's too much even for the Steinbrenners.

I think CC will ultimately go to the Yankees (the union will probably force him) and I really have a feeling that Boston is going to get Teixeira.

Yes, my point exactly if we dont get CC which i think is 50 50 right now, then they will def want Burnett and Lowe. With that offer of 140 to CC gone I think they will make a huge run at Teixeira also but i would love to see a rotation of
CC/Burnett
Wang
Joba
Lowe
Pettite

I totally agree. And that's what has me worried, as a Red Sox fan. As I said above, I really don't think the Yankees will sign CC for $23 mil a year AND Tex for, probably, also $23 mil a year. I just can't. Not with their pitching needs. So, if CC falls through, I fully expect the Yanks to pour everything into Tex.

I think the Red Sox can easily outbid the Angels (8 for 184 is my prediction), but not a scorned Yankee team.

Agreed on clutch hitting but Manny is a circus waiting to happen in New York i love Manny one of my favorite players to watch cause he is a great hitter. But we need pitching how many superstar players were on the Dynasty of the 90's? Nun! All role players and built around great starting pitching.

And if Manny didn't like the scrutiny and attention in Boston, how does he think he'd like New York?
