The Angels' intend to make a quick-strike offer to their biggest winter target, star first baseman Mark Teixeira, which means a fair proposal with a deadline. The offer has not yet been made, and it's unclear when it will be or how much time Teixeira will have to respond, but the Angels used this method successfully last offseason to lock up Torii Hunter for $90-million on a five-year deal.

But the stakes are even higher this time. Word is, Teixeira's agent, Scott Boras, is using the $153.3-million, eight-year contract that Miguel Cabrera got from the Tigers before last season as a baseline for negotiations, and Boras makes the points that Teixeira is a leader and also a free agent (Cabrera had two years to go before free agency when he signed that Tigers deal).
Teixeira is also drawing interest from the Nationals, Orioles, Red Sox, Mariners, Yankees and Giants, among others. One owner predicted Teixeira and CC Sabathia are two players who will get their price even in the worst economy since the Great Depression.

I'm getting tired of all this speculation, C.C...just decide already, the left coast or NYY. It's not a hard decision, I know I would go where the $$ is, we get it you're the cream of the crop this offseason. Burnett/Lowe/Boras...calm down with the absurd number of years and dollars that you guys are asking. Lowe is a 8-10 million a year pitcher, and Burnett is 10-12 million a year....if that. Only Halladay, Santana, Beckett (playoff version), and Lincecum (only one year..but if he was consistent) deserve that kind of dollars. I know Seattle drove up the average pitching market by signing Carlos Silva, but come on.
Anyway, hopefully Teixeria signs with the Yanks...

yeah I don't like that deadline deal at all. I want Tex with the Angels bad and this scares me.

As much of a stretch this would be im a big time O's fan... went to MOunt St. Joe's High School went Teix played there, and he was always thrilled about the idea of playing for the O's... Now with that being said, i wouldn't be suprised one bit at all if he turns down a little money in the Angels, to come back to a hitters park in Camden Yards, where his numbers would sky rocket. But then again its gonna be hard because we need the pitching and Burnett more, but we'll only have enough money to sign one of them.... But Go O'S!!!

In other words the Angels will make an offer below what the Red Sox or other teams will submit and then after the "window" for him to accept or not...which I know he won't the Angels higher ups will tell fans.....see we tried but.....Teixeira is an east coast guy...he's staying there for the best years of his career. I do feel scared by what the Angels will do or not do after Teixeira isn't signed...they could go after C.C. but their pitching has always been strong...they need offense...especially in the playoffs.....you know the playoffs don't you Angels?.....where you have had your butts handed to you for the last 6 years.

Tex won't come to NY. If he comes back to the east coast, it will be with Baltimore, and he will regret it. Otherwise, he stays with the Angels. Yeah, it would be nice to see him in pinstripes, but not for $150 million.

Angels will lose out completely on Tex if they impose a deadline. Boras does not make quick deals. He wants to stretch negotiations out as long as possible to allow all the teams to bid and then outbid each other to insure the highest price is paid in the end for his client. Tex won't sign anywhere before New Year's. Hell he could still be unsigned at the end of January if Boras sees he can keep getting teams to up their bids.

If Tex is coming back on the east coast, i see Boston being the strongest competitor for his services. They don't have Manny's contract on their payroll anymore and they surely can afford a 20-23 per contract for 5-7 years. If Tex is set to accept the best offer, Boston is the front runner....

I say give him the deadline if he doesn't sign move on. Ramirez may be a better cheaper alternative and the thought of Vlad and Manny back to back in the lineup is pretty scary. Moreno wants guys that want to play here if Tex wants to go make higher dollars on some team that never competes in the postseason like the Nationals, have fun.

I agree with your logic and this is a way GM's could counter Scott Boras. If they all set deadlines on their offers he wouldn't be able to drag out negotiations until January the way he usually does. The problem is he represents Manny as well so if the Angels irk him with the Tex dealings it might affect their ability to sign Manny as well. And if the owners all got together and tried to set deadlines on offers you know Boras would file charges claiming collusion and technically he would be right.

I think the only thinig that motivates Borass is the mighty dollar, so if the Angels didn't land Tex but still made the highest offer to Manny that would be all it would take. I like the way Moreno handles these things field a team that wants to play for you not just a team motivated by money. It's all a matter of finding that fine line between the Yankees and the Rays some high priced talent along with some young talent is the way to win now a days.

Sorry Boston no Teixeira for you...
As a senior, Teixeira was one of the best high school players in the country but went to Georgia Tech instead of signing a pro contract. The Red Sox had talked about choosing him in the first round, but wanted him to commit to a pre-draft contract. Teixeira refused a reported $1.6 million deal and fell to the ninth round, when Boston selected him.
After the '98 draft, Teixeira held hard feelings against Boston, telling the Baltimore Sun in 1999: "The Red Sox then spread the word I wasn't interested in signing. That was unfair. I don't think after what happened that I want any future involvement with the Red Sox."

A 7 years/140 millions + will help him to forget about those " hard times "...
