As a former catcher, I believe that the pitching coach has a great of input on who the ctacher will be. Some coaches want to determine the pitching plan, and expect the catcher and pitcher to execute. Others rely on the pitcher, especially a star like Santana. Others will look to a ctacher to put the plan together and call the game. Does anyone know Warthen's view??
Personally, I think Castro is a viable back up, especially with his bat. I'm not convinced that Schneider calls a great game and takes charge of inexperienced pitchers. He's always looking in the dugout...

Wow, the Mets need to do better at catcher than this. Schneider and Castro are not very good but come on...Varitek or Rodriguez?? Didn't both of these guys show their age down the stretch? Varitek especially was atrocious.

Garbage in, garbage out Blowmar.

There are indications the Mets might consider overhauling their catching situation. While the Mets haven't spoken publicly about any dissatisfaction with their tandem of Brian Schneider and Ramon Castro, some competing executives say the Mets, whose top priorities remain a closer and a starting pitcher, appear open to trading either catcher.

Should the Mets find a deal for their catchers, longtime Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek, a free agent, could be a possibility for them. Mets GM Omar Minaya has always liked Ivan Rodriguez, but it isn't known whether they'd consider I-Rod, as well.

Boston still has interest in keeping Varitek but isn't close to a deal with him yet. The Red Sox have looked into several other catching possibilities, including the Texas foursome of Jarrod Saltalamcchia, Gerald Laird, Taylor Teagarden and Max Ramirez.
