Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti, who has quite a puzzle on his hands with two or three infield openings, a leftfield opening and at least one more opening in the starting rotation, said in a phone interview with SI.com that they are looking into superstar free agent pitcher CC Sabathia after recently removing their well-chronicled initial $45-million, two-year offer to Manny Ramirez."It's certainly something we're interested in, and we'll see where it goes,'' Colletti said about Sabathia.

The Giants, Angels, Red Sox and Brewers are also believed to have interest in Sabathia, but the Dodgers -- who play in Sabathia's preferred California and preferred National League -- might be the best hope to steal Sabathia form the heavily favored Yankees in the CC Derby.

However, the Dodgers are well aware of the Yankees' market-setting $140-million, six-year offer to Sabathia, and executives around the league are skeptical whether Dodgers owner Frank McCourt will want to try to match the Yankees dollar-for-dollar. Under McCourt's ownership, the Dodgers have limited their free-agent deals to two or three years, except in the case of outfielder Juan Pierre, who got a five-year deal. "We have kept to that style,'' Colletti said. "(But) I don't have any rules. Everyone's taken on an individual basis.''

On the Ramirez front, Colletti indicated that for now the Dodgers would "wait to hear'' from Ramirez's agent, Scott Boras. However, it's clear they retain an interest in Ramirez, who became the most important midyear acquisition anyone made last summer and led the Dodgers into the playoffs by hitting .396 and knocking in 53 runs in 53 games after the trade, then batting before hitting .520 in the playoffs.

Said Colletti, "We need some pitching, we need to shore up the infield and we'll see what happens with Manny.''

thats all? been waiting for an update on the Dodger front and all we get is..."They're looking at CC"? Com'on every team in baseball is looking at CC and there have been tons of rumors about the dodgers prepping a offer for CC. Im hurt lol

time for dodgers to pony up the cash. sign hudson, ramirez, and CC. it will set you up for the next 5yrs. next yr they get rid of that stupid signing in Jones.

Easier said than done dodgerboy. First of all they have those three contracts of Andreu Jones, Juan Pierre and Jason Schmidt hanging on them like an albatross, and even though I believe Dodger Frank McCourt is two-thirds bull@#$%, that's a helluva lot of money you're wanting him to throw out there. As for looking at CC, there are a number of teams looking at him and the question is would he accept less money to play in his and mine beloved California or will he in the end decide to take the money and run with the Yankees. The Dodgers have 13 free agents and have to be very careful which ones they sign or let go just as they have to be even more careful who they decide to pick up on the FA market.

Colletti better fall back.....

November 21, 2008  03:42 PM ET

yeah wait and see colletti ? that was your approach last year and what happened? while we waited and sat the angels scooped up tori hunter in one day ,then we panicked and over paid on jones to silence the critics . the well publicized word is cc wants to be a dodger and if the dodgers are somewhere in the ballpark he will actually take a SMALL paycut to be a dodger. pony up ned/frank before we look stupid once again ,and loose another chance at a stud free agent to another rival (the giants)

Yes. Mike1196 does make extremely stupid, and off the wall, comments.

Dodgers are too cheap to make a serious offer to CC. They will offer 4 years $90 mill with a 5th year option.

If the Dodgers end up signing Sabathia, they should include some sort of "playing weight" clause. This wasn't done with Andruw Jones and look what happened!
My issue with Sabathia is obviously his weight and reminds me of a horribly out-of-shape ex-Dodger who was a lefty reliever in the early-80's named Terry Forster.
