There's been a lot of newspaper space (and some Web space, as well) dedicated to a potential battle between the archrival Red Sox and Yankees for free agent pitcher A.J. Burnett. But it appears much more likely that the real skirmish between these two hated rivals will be over another free-agent pitcher, Derek Lowe, who is cited by many baseball executives for becoming even more focused in his years out in Los Angeles.
While Burnett has some knocks against him (i.e. his best year always seems to come in his walk year), Lowe is coveted for being consistent, durable and clutch. Like Burnett, Lowe may want at least a five-year deal, and at 35, that's certainly no certainty. But he is drawing interest from a long list of teams, including the Mets, Braves, Phillies, Giants, Mariners and Dodgers. Lowe is believed to prefer a move back East, where he appreciated the extra intensity when he played for the Red Sox from 1997-2004.
Some of that intensity may be directed in a fight over him.

5 years for Lowe... 5 years for Burnett? I would rather give $200 mill for 10 years to Texeira!

either way the salaries are going to get way out of hand.....Burnett was healthy for one year and he's not getting any younger....whoever ends up with him will probably overpay him

Again, i wonder why the Sox would enter into a bidding war when they have good young pitching in Masterton and maybe Buchholz. They might want to put their money on Texeira or on a hitter who will help Papi and Bay...

you take lowe for 4 years option for 5, he isn't a superstar but the sox dont need a superstar. Lowe is a dependable inning eater who is sure to shore up the starting rotation. Beckett, Dice-K, Lester, Lowe, Wake/Buchholz if he can get it together, Masterson needs another year in pen and we can use the extra money for a bat to protect papi and bay. STAY away from burnett, let the yanks have him and we can laugh later when its pavano all over again

You want to give a 36 year old pitcher a 4 year deal? The same pitcher whom during his last two seasons in the AL posted ERA's of 4.40 and 5.40? This is the same pitcher who the Red Sox couldn't wait to rid themselves of? Let us not forget his agent is Scott Boras and he wants at least 16 million per season. PASS!

Last time he was in the AL he was out of the rotation by the end of the year and only got a nice contract for his post season heroics

I don't believe this is true. Red Sox don't want Lowe and they never have. They tried to trade him the second these new owners came to town. They don't want him now. There is no way Theo is giving D-Lowe a 5 year deal. It just isn't happening.

As a long time Yankee fan I would not touch Lowe with a bargepole, and that is assuming he even wants to come to the Yankees.Where do you get the idea this guy is good.?Over rated in my opinion, and I hope Cashman does not make another of his idiotic pitching aquisition mistakes, because as you all know he has a reputation for knowing nothing about reliable starters, well lets say his record precedes him.

So Jon Heyman is telling me that Derek Lowe has improved as a pitcher since he left the Red Sox.?In a division that is so weak, what was his E.R.A and win loss totals. Not very good I hear you say.If the Red Sox,who by the way could not wait to rid themselves of him, even though he showed up well in the 2004 post season, well if you are telling me that they are going after Derek Lowe again,I want some of what you are drinking. If I was the Yankees I would not touch him with a barge pole.Have we not learned the lesson about signing over the hill pitchers. If you want the list,I will send it you.

Lowe clutch? I think not when I think back to this last NLCS against the Phillies in Game 1.
