CC Sabathia is the target of many teams' affections this offseason.

People inside the Yankees organization are skeptical about whether the Angels are as serious as it seems about signing star free-agent pitcher CC Sabathia. Some Yankees officials seem to believe: 1) that the Angels leaked their alleged intention to make an offer to Sabathia approaching that of the Yankees' $140-million, six-year offer to drive down the demands of first baseman and stated top target Mark Teixeira, or 2) that if the Angels do go for Sabathia, it will be with an offer in the range of $100 million-$120 million, not $140 million.

I, however, tend to believe the Angels are serious about Sabathia.

A competing executive from another American League team told me he believes the Angels are "dead serious." He predicts the Angels will match Johan Santana's $137.5-million, six-year deal with the Mets, causing the Yankees to up their offer to $160 million over seven years. At that point, the Angels would have to decide whether to increase their own bid.

i laugh when i hear the yankees are going to offer sabathia this money. its completely stupid, first its ridiculous that sabathia would top santanas salary when santana is clearly the better pitcher. Even in sabathia's "career year" santana still had the better ERA. And sabathia has yet to pitch well in a playoff game. I know he hasnt had all that much experience but still, its certain hes no beckett. If the yankees were smart theyd let sabathia go to LA, and sign burnett and let their young talent produce. Sabathia i could see becoming a ARod becuase everyone will want him to pitch a shutout when it matters and if he pitches 7 innings and gives up 3 runs, he will be ridiculed.

Yes, and look how the cap has done such great things for basketball. Now, teams like the Knicks, and others, are basically tanking two full seasons in order to get under the cap so that they can sign players like LeBron and Bosh and Dewayne Wade in 2 years! And something tells me these teams arent exactly gonna cut season ticket prices while they put these crappy players on the court. Do we really want to add the term "expiring contracts" to the baseball lexicon too?

Plus, if you look, the same teams have won almost every year in basketball, while baseball has had a far more diverse list of champs. In basketball, in the past 20 years, the Lakers have won 5x, the Bulls have won 6x, the Spurs have won 3x, Houston and Detroit have won 2x, and Miami and Boston have won once. Most of those, by the way, are major market teams. While in baseball, teams like Florida (2x) St. Louis, Oakland, Cinci, Toronto and Arizona have all won in that time frame. Hell, since 2005, the Rays have won as many playoff series as the Yanks have. Cities like Miami and Tampa and Minneapolis/St.Paul, however, have proven that they do not deserve teams. If a team isnt viable, they should be contracted. Washington, DC is cruising down that path as well. The salary cap doesnt remove a sports' problems, it simply changes the types of problems. Smart management and player personnel decsions are still the deciding factor, otherwise the Yanks, Mets. Dodgers, Sox and Cubs would win every year, and that just isnt the case. The Royals won more championships in the decade of the 80's than the Yanks, and there was no salary cap then either.

Does an enormous budget give the Yanks more of a chance to win every year than otherrs teams? Yes. But then again, if we are going to cap slaries, as a Yankee fan and NY resident, I want ticket and concession prices capped too. If the Royals and Pirates are going to have the same player payroll as the Yankees, I want the same concession prices, ticket prices and parking prices as Royals and Pirates fans are getting too. Im paying a premium as a Yankee fan for that $200 mill payroll and the chance to watch atea,m that has a very good shot to win every year. If that goes away, I dont want to have to continue top pay that premium.

C.C's offer sets a bar for the Angels having to deal with Lackey next year. If you get C.C. you maybe let Lackey walk. Don't get C.C, Lackey will still get huge $$ next year, more than Burnett, Lowe or Dempster, but not CC.

CC will not go back to Milwaukee, that team missed it's shot and is done. Staff in shambles, position player ready to leave in droves, its over.

Players want to be Yankees because the team has built a mission on winning the WS and have done so 26 times in 105 years.

The Angels need Teix now, their offense is floundering and they can't give up the best and youngest bat on the market.

CC Sabathia is the target of many teams' affections this offseason.

Getty Images

Sure, the economy's in the tank. But there's only one Sabathia out there.

Maybe I am getting ahead of myself here. Maybe the Yankees are right that they are the only $135-million-plus game in town.

After all, the only official word I got out of the Angels since the Los Angeles Times reported on Tuesday that the Angels were intending to make a bid in the neighborhood of the Yankees' offer is: "Nothing's changed. We're still interested in Teixeira." If that's true, it would seem to support the Yankees' current beliefs.

Also supporting the Yankees' skepticism regarding the Angels are three more factors: 1) the Angels would appear to need Teixeira a lot more than they need Sabathia, 2) the Angels will want to extend their own star pitcher, John Lackey, very soon, and having a $20-million-plus pitcher on their payroll doesn't help that cause, and 3) Angels owner Arte Moreno is known to love Teixeira and has yet to show an inclination to give a pitcher a contract of such length.

However, I also know some of the Angels baseball people absolutely love Sabathia, and they probably don't mind the idea of creating a super rotation with Sabathia joining Lackey, Ervin Santana and Joe Saunders to form the most formidable foursome in the game.

The Angels are a team that is prone to surprise, as did they did last winter with their quick signing of center fielder Torii Hunter for $90 million, a deal that was consummated between GM Tony Reagins and agent Larry Reynolds at a Del Taco out on Interstate 91. At the time, the Angels didn't appear to need a center fielder, as they had only signed Gary Matthews Jr. the winter before.

Come to think of it, that surprise deal for Hunter also occurred on Thanksgiving week. Could history be repeating itself here?
