The Giants are in serious discussions with shortstop Edgar Renteria on a two-year deal, as they continue to try to shore up holes via free agency. It is expected that a deal could be completed soon. Earlier in the day, the Giants signed reliever Bobby Howry to a one-year deal, and previously they inked reliever Jeremy Affeldt to a two-year, $8-million contract.
A Renteria-Giants deal was reported last week by WFAN radio's Sweeny Murti but denied but several parties involved. It appears now that the Giants probably were waiting to make sure the Tigers didn't offer arbitration to Renteria. Since Detroit did not, the Giants will not lose a draft choice if they complete a deal with Renteria.
The Giants are looking into pursuing one of the big three -- CC Sabathia, Mark Teixeira or Manny Ramirez -- but it is believed they haven't decided which one to target yet.
