<intro>
The Giants are in serious discussions with shortstop Edgar Renteria on a two-year deal, as they continue to try to shore up holes via free agency. It is expected that a deal could be completed soon. Earlier in the day, the Giants signed reliever Bobby Howry to a one-year deal, and previously they inked reliever Jeremy Affeldt to a two-year, $8-million contract.

    A Renteria-Giants deal was reported last week by WFAN radio's Sweeny Murti but denied but several parties involved. It appears now that the Giants probably were waiting to make sure the Tigers didn't offer arbitration to Renteria. Since Detroit did not, the Giants will not lose a draft choice if they complete a deal with Renteria.

   The Giants are looking into pursuing one of the big three ...
</intro>

nooooooooooooo! Renteria is not an answer for the Giants, he is a mistake that will be on the books (Thank fully if it does happen its only two years). If they want to get a player to plug in at either of the middle positions go with Furcal, or trade for a player like Uggla or Hardy. Personally if we don't get either of these other guys, i feel more confident in Burriss and Frandsen than Renteria.

Renteria disappointed in Boston and disappointed in Detroit. His defense is slipping and he will turn 34 in mid-season.

In other words, he is perfect for San Francisco & Sabean.

Okay. Anyhoo ... armchair amateur baseball analysts (i.e. fans at computers like me) have floated the half-assed theory that these moves are part of a package that will, if not actually contend in 2009, show a major free-agent that SF intends to contend again soon and for some time. Not particularly because of the names, but as to the length and timing of the contracts--Sabean actually saved draft picks this year. It's a little like that whole Knicks-makes-room-now-for-LeBron-in-2011 thing. Or so they say. And despite the need for a bat, Sabathia is still the name most often mentioned. You know how rumors work in baseball, as in politics: if they're repeated often enough, they make themselves true.

The Giants won't sign Renteria AND Manny Ramirez because Manny had an affair with his wife back in 2005, notice the quick exit after Manny couldn't be traded. Infidelity seems to be the IN thing in Boston with Varitek's awful season being blamed on his divorce while the real reason for his divorce was because of his affair with Hazel Mae!!! At least we have A-Rod!!!
