LAS VEGAS -- The rejection by free agent shortstop Rafael Furcal of a $35 million, four-year A's offer has really stirred some response. "What the heck is he doing?" one GM from another team said, before adding, "Maybe he just didn't like Oakland."

While there are those out there who aren't lovers of Oakland, that doesn't usually discourage a free agent from taking his best offer.

It appeared Furcal was headed there. But perhaps he thinks he'll do better elsewhere.

The cross-Bay Giants are out, now that they've signed Edgar Renteria for $18.5 million over two years. The Cubs have been said to be a possibility, but reports out of Chicago suggest that a left-handed bat is the primary focus now. The Braves would have interest, but probably not until they traded their own shortstop, Yunel Escobar.

All along, though, there was said to be that dreaded "mystery team." Agent Paul Kinzer said a while back that my guess of the Reds was wrong. My next guesses are the Twins or Indians. And believe me, both are strictly guesses.

But one thing I know: Players don't normally pass up their best offer.
