Longtime Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek is planning to reject Boston's offer to arbitrate by tonight's midnight deadline, SI.com has learned.

Beyond a few relief pitchers, very few of the 24 players offered arbitration are expected to accept,  but Varitek was seen as a possibility since he made $10.4 million last year and would likely beat that in arbitration, even after a poor season offensively.

The Red Sox value his defense and leadership and believe the switch-hitter's problems offensively were limited to the left side of the plate.

Varitek will still have the option of working out a contract and remaining in Boston if the sides can agree.

He is easily the best catcher in baseball. Boston better re-sign him.

andy gray = delusional

December 7, 2008  03:15 PM ET

No kidding .. Why would you say such a **** statement like that. ( best catcher in baseball )

December 7, 2008  03:15 PM ET

Wow, has Borass gotten in Varitek's head. I am sure the Sox offered arbitration with fingers crossed hoping that he would reject it. The arbitration system is totally slanted to favor players, Tek would likely have gotten $12 million, which is ridiculous for an aging guy who hit .220 and can't throw out anyone stealing. Now the Sox will get 2 compensatory draft picks, if, and it is a big if, another team signs him. I think Borass has overplayed his hand this year with his free agents, the fact is that none of them even have an offer, now that the Dodgers withdrew their 2 year offer to Manny. Borass and Varitek clearly believe the Sox will get desperate. I wish they would make a deal with Texas and snag one of their young catchers. The moment that happens Varitek's market value will drop to zero, he'll be lucky if the Sox give him one year at $5 million.

December 7, 2008  03:16 PM ET

You are kidding me. He is an offensive liability and would want him as a back up at best. He can't even throw out runners anymore!

December 7, 2008  03:18 PM ET

Best thing for Boston is to sign him for 2 years and trade for a young catcher to be his replacement.

December 7, 2008  03:24 PM ET

Bora$$ is gotta be high on something.... really.

First, says he wants a Posada-like deal for Tek. He drew comparison's between Jorge's and Tek's age. Well, Jorge had the BEST offensive year in the history of baseball for a C of that age. Bora$$, you're crazy.

Then, says he wants a Zito-like deal for Derek Lowe. First off, I'd never use Zito's name while trying to get a deal for my client.... since Barry has been such a hugh bust. But, where's D-Lowe's Cy Young? Memory serves that Zito at least had a Cy in his back pocket before getting that big deal. Oh.... and he was much younger than D-Lowe is now.

All this coupled with Bora$$ egging on Manny to tamper with the outcome of MLB games. If the MLB had any guts, they'd investigate Manny laying down on the job (literally) and malingering his way into a trade.

Bora$$ is an evil cancer to the game. Do players deserve more dough? That's certainly something that can be discussed.... but the way Bora$$ goes about it is just despicable.

Tek should man-up and accept a lower deal with the Sox. I'm sure they'd agree to a 2 yr/8 mil per yr deal. Look yourself in the mirror and try to convince yourself that you deserve more, with a straight face.... I dare ya.

Simply amazing - had the Worst year possible Horrible Hitting stats/prob. worst in baseball at that position all-year and rejected Huge money? when boston shud let his over-the-hill carcass move on to retirement? Must be the Andruw Jones philosophy- Man, did he give Boston an chance to dodge a bullet - bye, bye Jason

Varitek is delusional if he thinks he is going to get a similar contract to Posada's. Posada was coming off a career year, Varitek is coming off an awful offensive season. If the Red Sox had Zambrano they would DH for Varitek during the games he pitched!

December 7, 2008  03:27 PM ET

Best catcher in baseball is Mauer. Get off the Kool-aid Andy Gray.

December 7, 2008  03:29 PM ET

Stop drinking the kool-aid Andy Gray. Joe Mauer is the best catcher in baseball.

Andy Gray is from NY, probably a Yankee fan and WANTS Boston to sign Varitek because he thinks he's washed up. Read between the lines folks . . .

Well Said! Borass is a wart on the arse of baseball. Perhaps the lack of offers to his clients reflects a new common sense attitude among owners and GMs.

Maybe by having the gall to cite the Posada and Zito deals in reference to his clients he make GMs think about how those deals worked out for the teams signing them.

I don't see any team other than the Sox interested in Tek as anything other than a back-up and now teams are going to have to consider that signing Tek will cost them two draft picks. I hope the Sox just walk away at this point, sending a clear message to Borass and his clients.

Varitek loves postizzi pee pee

December 7, 2008  04:07 PM ET

Varitek is GOD AWFUL. He is by far one of the most overrated players/catchers in the game. What kind of contract does he really think he's going to get after that miserable year he had last year? I don't care how good someone is behind the plate, but when you're not hitting like he was you hurt your team. He should be a man and go back to Boston for whatever they offer him.

Really great point. Best comment post thus far. Varitek, when combining Off & Def, is only marginally better than Jose Molina right now. And many would debate that as well. Tek's value is in his leadership and knowledge of the game. Those may be valuable, but not as much as BOREas appears to believe.

I concur. At this point I would rather have almost ANY other catcher than Varitek. Defensively he is sound, but his "catching" ability doesn't make up for the hole in the lineup he creates. I started calling him "rally killer".

December 7, 2008  05:06 PM ET

Should have traded Manny for Mauer...straight up!...back in July...!
