LAS VEGAS -- Ken Griffey Jr., who'd love to play near his Orlando hometown, just might have a chance to play for the Tampa Bay Rays if their first several hitting/outfield options fall through.
SI.com reported last summer that Griffey was hoping to go to the Rays before the White Sox made a trade to get him.
The Rays are said to want to sign a bona fide hitter to a one-year deal and are thought to be considering Milton Bradley, Pat Burrell, Bobby Abreu, Jason Giambi, Raul Ibanez and possibly others, as well. Cliff Floyd, who did a great job for them last year as their designated hitter, is another possibility if he is healthy enough to return.
But many of the players figure to get multiyear contracts. Certainly, Bradley, Abreu and Ibanez should be able to do that. As it turns out, Griffey just might wind up fitting into the Rays' budget better, and he'd be thrilled with that, especially now that Tampa Bay is a contender.
