LAS VEGAS -- The Mets' opening offer for star free-agent closer Francisco Rodriguez was for two years at $12 million plus a makeable vesting option for a third year, people familiar with the talks tell SI.com.
Rodriguez is considered the Mets' top choice to replace injured closer Billy Wagner. They may consider raising their offer at some point. It isn't expected Rodriguez will jump at the first offer. The Mets are meeting this afternoon with two more closing options, Brian Fuentes and Trevor Hoffman, and are thought to be weighing whether to make an offer for Fuentes. Mets GM Omar Minaya has in the past made simultaneous offers with the understanding that whichever player agrees first would have a deal.
It appears Kerry Wood, another star free agent closer, is on the backburner due to his history of injuries.
