I like Young too, but his contract was too much for a guy of his caliber. Texas pain his superstar money to be the face of the franchise. Unfortunately his production (few walks, little power, lots of strikeouts) do not suggest he is of superstar caliber. I expect they overpaid him in order to be the "face of the franchise" a la Cal Ripken in his later years. However, unlike Ripken he is no Hall of Famer in waiting.
Again, I like the guy, but I say make the trade (even though this is a typical Texas Rangers move) and get what you can while the "gettin' is good".

As much as it hurts me to say this i would technically agree with you guys. If the Rangers could get an ace for Young and maybe some prospects as well then that would probably be better for the ranger's situation. But I love young as a player and it would pain me to see him go. Texas may not still need michael young but i do!!!! Well...certainly anyone can use a player like him.

...and i certainly do not trust ranger management to make a decent trade with him anyway.

see post #5. you guys are overrating young and not thinking about the salary dump in this market. the guy hit 284 with 109 k's and only 12 hr. his skills have been diminishing for a couple years, you would be lucky to not have to eat much of this salary. plus like you said i wouldnt trust the rangers to get a good return anyways.

Trading Young would be a smart move. The Rangers are going to have to move Young anyway, whether it be to 3rd base or a trade because he is being pushed by a potentially better SS in Elvis Andrus. Andrus is probably more talented and definitely cheaper, so Young should be traded now at max value to get an established/ready to start pitcher in return.

Would the Dodgers part with Clayton Kershaw at least for Young? Forget the Angels. No way does Texas trade Young in the division. Maybe the Royals give the Rangers Greinke and some youngsters? I say do the deal if you get some quality guys in return. The Rangers don't need Young that badly anymore.

now way the dodgers give up kershaw for ANYBODY in the league. kuo ( a lefty major league ready starter) and a low to mid level minor leaguer if we take on that salary should do it. trading young reeks of a salary dump more than anything and when you dump you give more than you get.

Dillon083, I sympathize that you like Michael Young as a player and he is the current face of the Rangers. Maybe I am tainted because all of my favorite Rangers kept leaving when the Rangers couldn't afford to re-sign them. I was a fan of guys like Buddy Bell and Rick Honeycutt and I am a huge fan of Milton Bradley, though I have learned to accept that Bradley might not be a Ranger again next season.

I'm purely looking now at the Rangers putting the best talent they can afford on the field AND also putting a legitimate rotation together to challenge teams like the Angels, Red Sox and Yankees. I think if we look at the trades with the Braves, Red Sox and Reds, it might show that J.D. has learned a little something from his past mistakes. We can hope so, anyway.

LAS VEGAS -- The Mets, Angels, Dodgers and Royals are among several teams to inquire here about the availability of shortstop extraordinaire Michael Young of the Texas Rangers.

The Rangers are not shopping Young, but they are willing to listen to overtures on just about anyone, and that includes the five-time All-Star who won a Gold Glove in 2008 and has spent his entire career with Texas. There are quite a few teams in need of a shortstop, so it's not surprising that a number of them have asked about Young, a terrific all-around player who has $60 million and five years remaining on his contract.

Presumably, the Mets' interest would be for a second baseman, a position Young played beautifully when he first came to the majors in 2000 before moving to short in 2004. But the Mets say they won't acquire a second baseman unless they can first deal Luis Castillo -- a very difficult task, since Castillo is coming off an absolutely brutal, injury-plagued, out-of-shae season.
