LAS VEGAS -- With no response from top target CC Sabathia, the Yankees have instensified their efforts to sign free-agent starters Derek Lowe and A.J. Burnett. The Yankees appear to be considering a five-year proposal for Burnett, who has received strong interest from about a half-dozen teams, including the Braves, Red Sox, Blue Jays, Orioles.

Darek Braunecker, Burnett's agent, met with Yankees general manager Brian Cashman late Monday night.

As for Lowe, the Yankees are negotiating with Lowe's agent, Scott Boras, about a four-year deal for more than $65 million. The Phillies are among several teams that have shown strong interest in Lowe.

Burnett should be a focus past Sheets. Sheets is a better pitcher and both are injury prone

.****

That is just such a terrible idea.

And while both Sheets and Burnett are injury prone, at least Burnett has shown the ability to have success in the AL East. I wouldn't touch Sheets if I were the Yankees.

If you are looking fiscally and it looks like they are, why not sign Burnett and either lowe or sheets, id do lowe and overpay for him because it will still be cheaper then C.C.. Then go HARD after Mark TX. That way you 3 guys instead of 1 and if they get hurt so be it, its all a crap shoot anyway. Loading up on C.C. only is not fixing your 1b, CF or depth in your rotation problem. Just my 2 cents.

The Yankees should stay as far away from AJ Burnett as they possibly can ... He looks a lot like Carl Pavano redux ... and they're likely to get as much out of Burnett as they did from Pavano ...

Burnett has GREAT stuff, but has NEVER shown he can stay healthy ...

Make a strong play for the workhorse Lowe - three years and reasonable $ - and he'll be MUCH cheaper ... and sign Sheets to an incentive based contact ... and they'd be a LOT better off ...

Save the BIG money for some offensive help ...

3 years and reasonable $ for Lowe sounds great. But he's asking 4 years and $65 million, and that's simply insane.

The Yankees are going to buy a world champion ship and will do that by buying every big name player they can. I only hope that every deal goes a bust for them. It only makes me wish MLB would change their salary cap rules.

December 9, 2008  07:14 PM ET

The Yanks are not going to get Lowe. they will be lucky to get Burnett. C.C does not wanna pitch in NY. The Yanks best bet is to Sign Sheets and resign Andy P. Players don't want to play in NY cause of ownership, and to many egos on that team.

Revenue sharing and taxing will never allow a change to salary cap. Without big spending there is no way that small market teams can survive. This is not just talking about the yankees but every big market team. It helps the entire game. It is understandable how one can get upset with the stupid numbers that are being thrown around, but bottomline is it benefits everyone.

has anyone notice that ever since the Yankees have had a payroll over a $100M they have not won a thing?? and if there was a Salary cap in baseball lets say $150M the Yanks would not be able to compete in the AL East. and as far as Revenue sharing and taxing. they should do it like the NBA every dollar you go over the cap you pay back 100% so if you had a cap of 150M and the Yanks payroll was 200 Million they should have to pay 50M in Tax.

Bitching about a salary cap is just idiotic.

The Phillies had the 13th highest payroll in 2008, the Rays the 29th. The Brewers made the playoffs last year. The Astros, Diamondbacks, Cardinals, Rockies and Braves have made the WS in the last decade. The Marlins have won 2 World Serieses in their existence.

All while last year, the Top 3 teams (Yankees, Tigers and Mets) missed the playoffs.

It's not just about money. It's about being smart.

HyperRevue, we had this discussion a few weeks back, like I said I didnt think cc would become a yankee and burnett is the best option, I have no problem with them doing what they have to do to get burnett, and sheets as far as im concerned is pavano with talent lol..

I agree. I think 5 years for Burnett is insane but if CC refuses the Yankee's offer, I really can't fault them for doing what it takes to get Burnett. I still think they'll regret going 5 years, though. I certainly don't envy the Yankees' position this off-season.

December 9, 2008  08:33 PM ET

Ya as a Yankee fan I don't want CC now it's obvious he want's no part of New York.

December 10, 2008  08:26 AM ET

Well all this is a moot point now since CC has reportedly signed with the Yanks!

So much for all the NYC fans' resolute belief that CC hated New York, the East Coast, the AL.... Enjoy the next 6 years of him.

What's insane for most teams is not insane for the Yankees. This obviously isn't news to anyone - they can afford to pay a lot more than all other teams. Yes, even Boston. Plus, there's no way they will leave anything to chance with moving in to that new stadium next year, thus will overpay to get whomever they want. Hey, if I was a Yankee fan I'd be thrilled.
