LAS VEGAS -- Some baseball people are upset that about-to-be-Yankee CC Sabathia got a deal for about $160 million. But his still isn't likely to be the biggest deal of the winter. Two high-ranking baseball officials predicted that star free-agent first baseman Mark Teixeira just might hit the reputed $200-million asking price.

At least two teams and perhaps more are believed to have already bid $160 million, and at least four teams still appear to be in the running. The Red Sox, Angels, Nationals and Orioles appear to be among the serious suitors for the switching-hitting star. Angels owner Arte Moreno told SI on Tueesday, "Teixeira's my guy,'' meaning he remained their top target.
Baseball people say Teixeira's agent, Scott Boras, is trying to make the case that Teixeira is closer on the superstar scale to Alex Rodriguez (who makes $30.5 million a year) than Torii Hunter ($18 million).

Out of control!!!!

moreno screwed himself last year with that overdone hunter contract. now if he wants teixeira he has to come with the cheese.

Pony up Arte... but good luck when you face the Yankees in the Playoffs. C.C., Burnett, Sheets, Joba, Wang

December 10, 2008  02:13 PM ET

Wang is now #5? hehe.

Good luck against the Yankees? The Angels own the Yankees.. always have, always will!

Arte time to pony up your 200 mil and get your boy. Don't let him go to the Redsox or we're never gonna get by them in the playoffs. You need that big bat.

Youre an idiot! I love how every Yankee fans thinks they will sign every free agent every year. They had to beg foe CC to sign because its pretty clear he didnt want to sign with them. I say he falls apart in three years and the Yankees miss the playoffs again this season regardless of signing him. The yankees are a joke at this point.

Till your pitchers can get you past Boston and Tampa I wouldn't be talking yet. Yankees are taking on some serious injury risk in some of those pitchers. Lets see if they can make it through the year healthy.

the yankees are a joke?? they have one of the best pitching staffs in baseball now that they have added cc and are on the verge of locking up lowe also. cc,wang.joba,lowe,hughes..its pretty good. plus dont be suprised if they sign manny to protect a-rod. hank came out and said that he wants manny today. all im saying is watch out for the yanks in 09

December 10, 2008  02:35 PM ET

I think that a team whose entire salary is less then a-rods or Tex's will have a better season than the yanks or angels

December 10, 2008  02:35 PM ET

The Angels had Tex last year in the playoffs and still didn't get by the Red Sox

December 10, 2008  02:38 PM ET

Lowe's not that great, take it from a red sox fan who watched him for 7 years, he did what he did in the worst division in baseball last year and in the national league. He's a head case, when he gives up a hit he can't keep his head straight.

All Yankees issues are not gonna be solved by signing CC and Lowe. The fact that they just gave CC a seven year deal has me laughing like i ate mushrooms. Lowe was garbage before going to the NL. He will still be effective but not the way you think. Hes a groundball pitcher so all thats gonna do is make Jeter look even more like trash defensively. The team is old and signing Manny is just gonna make them older. Have fun with your billion dollar payroll while having the balls to ask for help to build the new stadium. The Yankees will miss the playoffs again this year. With or without CC they are the third best team in the AL east.

I wouldn't go that far. I think the rays are gonna fall off this year so the red sox will win the division and the yankees will be number 2 by default.

December 10, 2008  02:44 PM ET

Anyone who gives Mark Teixeira $200 million should be beaten to death in front of there fans. Im a Sox fan and if they give him $200 million i will no longer be a Sox fan.

December 10, 2008  02:45 PM ET

Wow, $200 million is such an exorbitant amount of money for a baseball player. First A-Rod, now this. Don't get me wrong, these guys are great players, but c'mon.

The Rays are not going anywhere. They are here to stay for a while and we have to deal with it. In fact they should only get better because the young guys are still developing.

December 10, 2008  02:47 PM ET

cashman went to cal.and droped to his knees and gave the biggest **** that cc ever got.yankees are still gonna suck cause you got guys like roberson knoblock who cant reach first base and is the lazyiest defender ive seen in years. you also got purple liped arod who is a punk player getting paid all that money to choke in clutch situations...and jeter made more errors than lugo and is on the decline..so that said your still gonna have a terribal infield..

December 10, 2008  02:47 PM ET

Tex is not worth this money. I lost any respect I had for the guy when he began making his demands with the Rangers. He put his interests above the team and created a public spectacle. His talent does not warrant the money and his attitude would certainly make me question his impact on the moral of my team.

lowe is not as good as e veryone thinks i agree but the man has never been on the dl and pitches 200 innings everyear. thats all we need this year because a guy named phil hughes is gunna break out
