LAS VEGAS -- The Mets are looking at the Pirates' Matt Capps and a few others in addition to Colorado's Huston Street as they begin to focus on a set-up man to front new closer Francisco Rodriguez. One problem the Mets are encountering, though, is that teams are insisting on young lefthanded pitching prospect Jon Niese, whom the Mets do not want to trade, in return.

The Rockies' rejected the Mets' offer of Aaron Heilman for Street, but perhaps those talks can be resurrected. The Mets also bleived to have talked to the Cubs and Mariners about relief help.

Capps is good but injury prone. Steet would not be traded for Heilman as Street has more upside!

are the mets going to get michal young? also do they lose draft choices for signing rodriguez? is there a right handed bat for this left handed lineup on the horizon? i do like the direction of the team so far, would also like them to get a player that has heart!!!!

this might sound crazy, but what about this idea - the dodgers want manny back, and i am sure they want to wash their hands of andruw jones - would the dodgers be interested in taking on castillo's contract for andruw? the dollars are essentially a wash (I think with andruws deferred payment, it would cost the mets more) but he is a right handed hitter with power, provides a defensive upgrade in the outfield over any platoon, can play all three outfield positions, and only has 1 year left on the deal, clearing the way for f-mart or giving them the opportunity to sign holliday or jason bay - both righties - if they decide to go that route... plus by abandoning castillo, it would allow them to bring in o-hud, who I think most people agree is exactly what this team needs...
clearly the bullpen needs work, and heilman plus for street might not be bad idea... I don't understand reluctance to part with pedro feliciano, who has digressed to being a lefty specialist, when they have to deal with schoenweis, who if you look at his splits is death to lefties... maybe they could get a bit prospect back if they add feliciano... I also don't understand the reluctance to part ways with nick evans, bobby parnell, or eddie kunz - there will never be a spot on this team for nick evans other than a role bench player, and if teams value him higher than that, then the mets should give him up enthusiastically, and with parnell and kunz, the mets have plenty of pitching depth in the minors that have been excelling in their roles - and brad holt could easily be the mets best pitching prospect and could rise through the minors ala mike pelfrey of a couple years ago or a joba chamberlain like rise from the yankees...
I think if teams really want those three - evans, parnell, and kunz, then go ahead and trade them...

Capps is injury prone? What? Two stints on the 15-day in three years? That guy is a horse, takes the ball every time he's called upon. 85 games in '06. 76 in '07.

You freaking Mets fans don't deserve someone like Matt Capps. Capps walks 11 guys a year. Heilman walks 11/series. You deserve Heilman and all his blown saves and 2 to 1 K/BB ratio. We'll keep Capps, and I'll watch your bullpen suck you out of the playoff again this year.

Capps last 3 years 213.2 IP - 33 BB
Heilman last 3 years 249 IP - 94 BB

Heilman for Street straight up? Is this a joke?

what about last year BurghFan?

Capps went on the dl last year on July 2 with should bursitis and did not join the big club again until august 23, - essentially missing 2 months of the season, so get your facts straight on that.

he's also free agent after this season so he may not even stay in pittsburgh, so huntington will need to get something for him.

pirates would use heilman as an affordable 4/5 starter, which is what he wants to do and frankly what he is better at and also would fill a need for pittsburgh. the mets should have put him in that role. his last start for the mets, he tossed a complete game 1-hitter.

Ciavolino: you're missing the point. Even Pittsburgh doesn't want Heilman.

Honestly though, other than Capps the Pirates had problems throwing strikes out of the bullpen. We picked up the Hansen kid (who has some control issues) in the Bay trade. We don't need another guy like him in Heilman. Sorry...a reliable set-up man for a champion-contender...is going to cost FAR more than Heilman.

Capps will still have two more years of arbitration eligibility after 2009, so he isn't going to be a free agent until 2011. Get your facts straight, di(kweed.

I was there when this happened:

Aaron Heilman (2-7) began the ninth with a 5-4 lead, but allowed four straight Pirates to reach after striking out leadoff hitter Nate McLouth. Doumit hit a tying single off the right-center wall and Heilman hit Andy LaRoche with a pitch to load the bases.

Heilman absorbed his third blown save in five opportunities and is 1-4 with a 10.97 ERA in his last nine games.

"You just keep pitching," Heilman said. "You just keep going out there and keep battling. It's all you can do."

No thanks. Keep your turd. We'll keep our "injury prone" closer.
