Jj-putz
J.J. Putz will have to adapt to an eighth-inning role.
Brad Mangin/SI

LAS VEGAS -- One day after signing closer Francisco Rodriguez, the Mets have acquired J.J. Putz in a three-team, 12-player trade with the Indians and Mariners.

The Mets ship right-hander Aaron Heilman, outfielder Endy Chavez, lefty Jason Vargas and three minor leaguers to the Mariners for Putz, center fielder Jeremy Reed and reliever Sean Green in the first trade by new Seattle general manager Jack Zduriencik.

Outfielder Franklin Gutierrez was sent from the Indians to Seattle. Cleveland gets reliever Joe Smith from the Mets and second baseman Luis Valbuena from Seattle.

The three minor leaguers New York sent to Seattle were first baseman Mike Carp, right-hander Maikel Cleto and outfielder Ezequiel Carrera.

Putz, who was an All-Star in 2007 when recorded 40 saves with a 1.38 ERA, will become a high-priced setup man for the Mets. He's owed $5 million in 2009 and has a team option for 2010 at $8.6 million with a $1 million buyout.

Wow, a 12 man trade? Is this the NBA?

December 10, 2008  10:16 PM ET

I get that Putz is good and all (having watched him pitch a lot as an Angels fan), but SIX players to swing a trade for a reliever who barely played last year? Lord.

December 10, 2008  10:21 PM ET

6 players is a lot, but of the 3 named here won't be missed if Putz is setting up K-Rod. I've heard Joe Smith mentioned too... I'd miss him but still be okay with it.

I wonder who else the Mets would get back with Putz. It is not just Putz. As a Mets fan I can dream of Ichiro but that is **** tale. Image Reyes and Ichira 1-2, that would the best top of the lineup in the majors. Ichiro would be a nice #2 hitter also. He rarely strikes out, makes good contact, hits for a good average and with the big bats behind them watch out.

since when is f-a-i-r-y a word that needs to bleeped?

December 10, 2008  10:27 PM ET

Skelley: Did it ever occur to you that the Mets would not be getting ONLY Putz? There are only 5 of the 12 players listed above. Isn't it possible that one or two of the remaining 7 would come to Queens?

December 10, 2008  10:30 PM ET

im with eddie. the mets have given up on a carp whos a lesser version of mike jacobs. ill miss smith too but endy heilman and carp can go. id like to see castillo in there as well.

December 10, 2008  10:31 PM ET

how about ibanez? could he be part of the deal? unless the other three are bottom rung type prospects

December 10, 2008  10:37 PM ET

ibanez is a free agent.
Fox News has Mets getting Jeremy Reed and Sean Green with Putz... wow this has taken some crazy turns the last hour

December 10, 2008  10:40 PM ET

Putz will only be better after switching leagues.

Heilman has been getting shafted out of mucho dinero by the Mets for too long now. If he was a starter (as he was at Notre Dame) he would've been making 3-4 mil more a year.

December 10, 2008  10:49 PM ET

i have always hated heilman. he is garbage in the pen and will be worse in the rotation. as long as the mets aren't giving up any real prospects i am fine with this deal. i just hope that Putz does have issues being a set up man. i can't see the mets keeping putz for more then 2009 because he has a 8.6 million option for 2010, which is alot for a set up man

December 10, 2008  10:56 PM ET

I'm still not quite sure what's going on. I'm fairly confident Putz'll be a Met based on all of the report, but I still can't tell how many players their giving up or who exactly they're getting. I'm almost certain Heilman, Chavez, Carp and Smith are gone. That might be it, 2 more might go. And Putz is going to the Mets along with 1-2 other players. I've heard Jeremy Reed, I've heard Sean Green, I've head Jose Lopez. I just want to see how this shakes out. It could be GREAT for the Mets.

December 10, 2008  10:59 PM ET

bring on PUtz and lets get started on signing 2 more starts..the best free agency for the Mets so far... keep it on ..

December 10, 2008  11:15 PM ET

its starting to look like minaya knows if the team blows it this year he wont be around, so he is willing to sell the farm for an injured or underperforming closer to set up his new toy.

how much money would they have in the pen with wagners salary with k-rod and putz plus the rest of the boys? probably kc's payroll

ibanez is a free agent!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

you cant trade for him only sign him

December 10, 2008  11:27 PM ET

The Mets really did not give up much. Endy Chavez is the only one that could be lose this year but Tatis and Murphy can fill that role this year. Putz is better than Heilman, who would have left next year (I think) because he thinks his 2 pitches are good enough to start. Mike Carp has potential but you never know with minor leaguers. He looks like Mike Jacobs to me. Carp's numbers last year in AA, 17 hrs, 72 RBI, 79 BB, 88 K, .299 avg in 134 games.

December 10, 2008  11:38 PM ET

wow if the mets can give up only endy and heilman to get putz id say do it in a heartbeat. he can set up krod and the mets would have easily the best 1-2 punch at the back end of the pen.

December 10, 2008  11:39 PM ET

DONE DEAL!!!!

December 10, 2008  11:48 PM ET

I forgot to add Joe Smith was traded also but the Mets got a RP Sean Green. His splits pre and post all star game are crazy but I know nothing about him to say anything.
