LAS VEGAS -- One day after signing closer Francisco Rodriguez, the Mets have acquired J.J. Putz in a three-team, 12-player trade with the Indians and Mariners.

The Mets ship right-hander Aaron Heilman, outfielder Endy Chavez, lefty Jason Vargas and three minor leaguers to the Mariners for Putz, center fielder Jeremy Reed and reliever Sean Green in the first trade by new Seattle general manager Jack Zduriencik.

Outfielder Franklin Gutierrez was sent from the Indians to Seattle. Cleveland gets reliever Joe Smith from the Mets and second baseman Luis Valbuena from Seattle.

The three minor leaguers New York sent to Seattle were first baseman Mike Carp, right-hander Maikel Cleto and outfielder Ezequiel Carrera.

Putz, who was an All-Star in 2007 when recorded 40 saves with a 1.38 ERA, will become a high-priced setup man for the Mets. He's owed $5 million in 2009 and has a team option for 2010 at $8.6 million with a $1 million buyout.
</intro>

Terrible trade for the Mets. First, they gave up way too much and didn't get enough in return. And second, Putz will NOT be happy being a setup man, as this will impact how much he'll make when his current deal runs out. He had one down year thanks to injuries, but he's more talented than K-Rod (who has seen his velocity diminish, wait until he blows a save in NY, or if they actually make him get more than three outs for a save...) and Putz won't be happy setting up KRod. Terrible trade.

The Mets gave up too much? Are you serious? How often do u get a guy with the lights out stuff for a bunch of stop gap guys? Heilman was burnt out and disgruntled, Smith is a solid 6th or 7th ining guy at best (as is Sean Green so thats a wash) and Chavez is a nice 4th or 5th outfielder (as is Reed so thats a wash too). The biggest prospect given up was Mike Carp who has upside but the organization ranked him 3rd behind Nick Evans and Daniel Murphy so where exactly was his long term impact? Jason Vargas couldn't even crack a rotation that had guys like Nelson Figueroa, Brandon Knight and and Tony Armas strting a big chunk of games, nuff said about him. The other 2 guys Maikel Cleto and Ezequiel Carrera, are prospects that I can guarantee you, me, everyone else on this board, and Heyman himself never heard of. That's called giving up NOTHING. Also can we hear from Putz himself that he unhappy before we assume that he is? If Putz pitches to 1.38 ERA and 80 K's in 71 IP this year like in 07' he'll get his $$. My guess is that you are either clueless Mets fan or whiny Yankee fan thats pissed off your GM couldn't make a no-brainer deal like this to get a setup man for Mo.
