<intro>
LAS VEGAS -- The on-again, off-again trade of Mike Cameron for Melky Cabrera appears back on again. Brewers general manager Doug Melvin told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel there's "a strong possibility it could still happen.'' And before he left here, Yankees GM Brian Cashman also spoke fairly positively to some people about the chances for a trade with Milwaukee.

Some opposing executives seemed stunned the cash-rich Yankees asked Milwaukee to pay a portion of Cameron's $10-million salary for 2008, and Brewers people were not at all happy about that thought, especially after the Yankees outbid them by about $60 million for their own free agent starter CC Sabathia. So for a little while there, the chances for a quick trade looked iffy.

</intro>

I am 100% agreeing with Reggie44SGF. Melky will produce, I think the wake up call last year going to the minors will help. However, I think he still needs a good slap upside the head. He has to stop night lifing with Cano. The two of them together is bad for each other. The Yank Management has to let them know, no more night life and if you do your gone. Phil Coke looked very comfortable and looked like he knew what he wanted to do on the mound. He looks like a keeper and yes, Phil Hughes deserves a chance. How can 2 guys lose so much value (Hughes and Kennedy) in one season? Were they overrated to begin with? Give them a shot and save some money. Texteria...yes, if the Yankees think they can get buy with the current line-up I think it's a mistake. Get Texteria and bury Boston and the Rays (aka one hit wonders). Will Posada come back to form with the bat? Look at the Yankees production from catcher last year.......NADA. With Texteria I think they can get buy with CC, Wang, Joba, Hughes and Pettite!

The two of them were always together and there are apparently people within the Yankees who think they hung out too much and stayed out together too late. They've already taken Abreu (another close friend of Cano) out of the mix and now they're trying to ship out Melky in hopes that it will get across to Robbie that he has to hunker down and focus.

I think Brett Gardner is the right guy at the wrong time. If the Yankees were looking to replace Damon then Gardner would be given a shot (and it wouldn't shock me if he is given that shot when Damon is gone after this season). But for right now the Yankees are looking to replace two of their most productive offensive players (Giambi and Abreu) and as such need to bring in guys who can add thump to the lineup - hence Cameron and his 25 HR get a long look.

And comparing him to Lofton is just silly - first of all Cameron is a good clubhouse guy, Lofton was not. And Lofton's big problem was that he came here when Bernie Williams was still playing and Joe Torre had zero intention of moving Williams. Cameron has no competition in CF unless Austin Jackson blows people away in spring training.

But they are looking to replace 2 of their top 3 run producers (Giambi and Abreu) and so they have to find someone who can play CF and also add some pop to the lineup - that's why guys like Cameron and Ankiel are being looked at. Next season, when Damon is gone, I could easily see Gardner taking his spot in LF and at the top of the Yankee lineup.

That monetary request by the Yankees probably gets filed under the heading: Hey, it doesn't hurt to ask (as long as you don't mind some teasing from your compatriots).

It's doubtful the Brewers will pay much, if any, of Cameron's deal. And yet, there's optimism now for a trade. Cameron would ably fill the Yankees' need for a proven center fielder, while Brewers people are hopeful Cabrera will shake of a terrible sophomore season in New York to replicate what he did as a rookie.
