LAS VEGAS -- Star free-agent pitcher A.J. Burnett is weighing final offers from the Yankees and Braves and will make a decision soon, Burnett's agent, Darek Braunecker, said.
"We're in decisionmaking mode. It's down to (the Yankees) and Braves,'' Braunecker said. "It's a matter of what's in his heart.''
Yankees co-owner Hal Steinbrenner told Newsday he's "optimistic'' about signing Burnett but qualified that statement by saying he's always optimistic.
The Yankees have offered $80 million, perhaps a touch more, over five years. It isn't known whether the Braves matched that bid after first offering $60 million over four years with a vesting option that could take the contract to five years.
The Yankees are also talking to free agent pitchers Derek Lowe, Ben Sheets and their own Andy Pettitte. Yankees GM Brian Cashman flew to Houston to recruit Pettitte when he left the Winter Meetings here but the offer is believed to have remained at $10 million. Pettitte asked for $16 million, the same salary he made in 2008.
