What I can't understand is why the Yankees don't jump all over Ben Sheets in the first place. Pettite is too old. Sheets has tremendous talent and upside. Even if he gets injured from time to time I'd rather have him and Phil Hughes as a fill in rather than the aging Pettite

Adios Andy! What a short memory you have that it was the Yankees who stood by you with the HGH controversy and paid you $16 million for a .500 record in 2008. Sorry you feel "disrespected" with a "measly" $10 million offer. Have fun in your mystery city! Let's use that $10 million toward Tex or Manny and get that big bat we need!!

Man, I pray it's a Red Sox offer, and a legitimate one. Does Pettitte take 3 years at $12 million from the Red Sox or 1 year at $10 million from the Yankees? Then we'll see how loyal Pettitte is.

They treated him terribly 5 years ago when this gerbil Cashman lied multiple times throughout September & October, once sitting right next to Andy in a press conference saying, "Andy is our top priority this fall" and then, after the '03 World Series, 7 weeks of not 1 contact to the guy - not even Torre, whose own job was on the line, contacted him. Not during their 10-day window of exclusivity! Why the hell didn't they sign him right then and there? They had NO ONE waiting in the wings to take his place - OH, WAIT - they did indeed! Pavano, Vasquez, & K.Brown, the latter whom Cashman signed within an hour of Andy's press conference in Houston. Top priority, my foot. They let him die on the vine, for those nitwits. Cashman's terrrible track record in signing and re-signing pitchers dates back to the shipping off of Stottlemyre's prize pupil, southpaw Ted Liilly, at the July deadline the year before, in a 3-team trade that brought the Yankees the stellar Jeff Weaver.

Surely, Andy is not the pitcher today that he was a decade ago. Yet, among all these clowns in this season's market - the signed and the unsigned - he has logged innings and K's with the best of them this past season. He's the only one outside of Lowe with world series experience, and not just in the last century! Sheets has had trouble with the media in Milwaukee. MILWAUKEE! What, over the sausage race? Peavy's spent his whole career in the most pitcher-friendly park in the MLB, and in the worst-batting division to boot. CC has flamed out in the post-season 2 years in a row. AJ Burnett is a Yankee killer, but hasn't seemed to beat anyone else with any consistency. Andy took a club with the single worst team batting average in MLB history to its very first World Series - that is nothing to sneeze at, especially if you are the Yankees who had gone home by then.

Who with an IQ above room temperature dropkicks southpaws for right-handed pitchers in Yankee Stadium? This one factor is the saving grace of signing Sabathia for crying out loud. Sign Andy - give him some perks, let him pitch opening day as the lone member of this starting rotation to have continuity with the old dynasty, I am sure he will slouch back to his 5th spot in the rotation and teach the kids a little bit about how a hayseed handles the NY press and the NY crowds. And let his wife sing "America the Beautiful" at the 7th inning stretch a few times. She did this at Minuitemaid Park, and has a much better voice than Ronan Tynan! Do your job! Sign southpaws! Stop with these 2nd-tier yahoos who're the flavours of the hour.

It's all relative in their world dude. $10 million to these guys is like $100k to us. Trust me. I know some ballplayers personally and it's the truth. I have family in the Yankees org. Just because they make all that money doesn't mean they sit on it and save it all. Their life styles are competely different. Most guys spend it twice as fast as they make it. Their kids wear top of the line everything. They eat in the best restuarants all the time. Their kids are all in private schools year in and year out. I'm not saying feel sorry for them, trust me I don't, but for someone to just come out and say that Andy is a total phony really doesn't know what their talking about.
Plus, who would you rather have in a crucial game, Andy Pettite who's pitched on the big stage his whole career or Ben Sheets/Derek Lowe?? I'd hand the ball over to Andy every day of the week and twice on Sundays.

How exactly have they treated him terribly? Pettitte made $16 mil last year. He is no longer a $16 mil pitcher. Right now and in the forseeable future Burnett is a better pitcher then Andy. Burnett is making $17 mil/yr. Kinda makes sense too me. The Sox should seriously hope they dont sign Andy, because i'm sure that mill make the Yankees seriously consider signing Manny.

It's been a mystery to many why veteran left-hander Andy Pettitte hasn't taken the Yankees' $10-million offer. But here could be a clue as to why he hasn't: Pettitte's people apparently are telling folks he has a $36-million, three-year offer from another, unnamed team.

Pettitte, who didn't return SI's calls regarding his reputed offer, has been the Yankees' first choice for their final rotation spot after reaching agreements with high-priced free-agent stars CC Sabathia and A.J. Burnett for $243.5 million in total. But it isn't believed that this $36-million claim has moved the Yankees to change their offer by even one dollar, which could indicate they question whether such an offer exists.

There's no evidence that Pettitte has received a deadline yet from the Yankees. The well-respected longtime Yankee has made it clear that the Yankees are his first choice, as he's said he wants to pitch in the new Yankee Stadium. However, he did have one previous bitter breakup with the Yankees; that's when he went home to Houston and pitched for the Astros from 2004 through 2006.

If Pettitte doesn't ever take the Yankees' longstanding offer, the Yankees will consider either making an offer to Ben Sheets or resuming discussions with Derek Lowe to round out their revamped rotation.
