One reason the Yankees are willing to wait so many weeks for Andy Pettitte's response to their $10-million offer is that the Yankees appear to have some reservations about Ben Sheets' medical situation. While Sheets' late-season injury is said to be related to the flexor tendon, and not the actual elbow, Sheets has suffered a variety of nicks over the years. The New York Post mentioned the Yankees' concerns today.
In addition to Sheets, Derek Lowe has also been mentioned as a fallback option should Pettitte decline the Yankees' offer. While Pettitte's handlers have suggested another team is offering him $36 million for three years, Yankees people remain confident that Pettitte will eventually re-sign with them.
