The Giants appear to be taking a close look at free-agent third baseman Joe Crede. They've reviewed Crede's medical report and don't appear discouraged about pursuing Crede, a terrific third baseman who's been hampered at times by back trouble.
Crede, instrumental in the White Sox's 2005 World Series championship, hit .248 with 17 home runs and 55 RBIs in 2008, when he missed significant playing time with back woes. The Giants have been by far the most aggressive team in the NL West and are making a bid to steal a winnable division with their moves this winter.

Huhh? Typical Sabean. He's turning into a poor-man's Al Davis. Get the name, forget the age/stats/production. See Randy Johnson, Edgar Renteria signings. Giants fans can tolerate a losing team with a plan more than this band-aid approach of turning the team over every year. Give us something to believe in, Sabes.

Just think, the Giants had Pedro Feliz just a year ago, and let him walk. Now they're going to throw money at Crede?

Well, in regards to Pedro Feliz, he was looking for a 3-4 year deal. With the offensive production we KNEW we were going to get from him, we definitely didnt want to give him a mid to long term deal. With Crede, you get a proven offensive AND defensive player. Yes, he had back problems last season, but this would be a one year deal where we could evaluate his game and his health. When healthy, this guy is one of the top 3B in the game and is capable of hitting for average while hitting 25-30 HRs and driving in a ton, not to mention giving you Gold Glove caliber defense at a position we dont have ANY depth at. I have been calling for this to happen, I believe this would be a great move. If he proves to be healthy, give him an extension. Now go get Manny and we will see the Yanks/Rays in the Series.

I don't think the Giants are going to "throw money" at Crede. If they sign him, it would probably be on an incentive based 1-2 year deal. It's not like they'd invest heavily in him. And if it came down to it, who would you rather see at third base in San Francisco? Kevin Frandsen and the Jose Castillo's of the world, or a healthy Joe Crede? I take a healthy Joe Crede who last time he played a full season hit 30 home runs with 94 RBI while winning the silver slugger award and he should have won a gold glove that year too. Safe to say, if equally healthy, Crede is a much better player than Pete Happy.
That said, I'd almost rather see them go after Wigginton, seeing that he's got the versatility to play second if needed. If Burris shows he's not ready for the everyday job there, and Kevin Frandsen isn't getting the job done, Wigginton could be an insurance policy. Not to mention he can play the corner outfield spots and first base in pinch in addition to 2nd and 3rd. Wigginton for 2 years and 10 million bucks wouldn't be too bad at all. He's basically a sure bet to hit a solid .275+ with 20 hr's and drive in over 70 runs a year if given 400+ at bats.

@Bob Raines: If you really watched enough Giants games youwould know that Pedro only gets his RBIs when the games don't matter. He's probably only as good of a hitter as our old setup man Felix Rodridguez.
Crede is an instead upgrade offensively and defensively.

Yes, Father, but when healthy hes one of the top 3B in the league. He would make our offense much better while filling a desperate need. A one yr deal with performance incentives would be a great move if they think he'll be healthy.

Well of course you'd need to make Crede pass a physical, but health for health, he's better than Feliz and nobody's going to argue that.

The only reason the Giants would have to sign Crede would be as an excuse to not let Sandoval play.

Sandoval would move to 1st in that scenario, I think.

Trade for Garrett Atkins or Adrian Beltre if you sign Manny.

Jcargle, like shanghjaijim said, Sandoval would move over to first base.. I think they are more comfortable with him playing 1B then 3B as that is the "hot spot" of the infield.. we'd rather have a proven 3B playing the position rather than an experiment situation, Sandoval seems to be an above average hitter, but I think playing 3B would take a lot out of him in terms of the pressure playing the position brings. I also think we bring in Crede or another 3B with a bat (NOT BELTRE) to take some pressure of Sandoval's bat, dont think hes ready for the 3rd spot in the lineup. If he bats 6th, he would see much better pitches and then be much more productive. And no, if I am Sabean, I am not trading any of my pitchers for Atkins, especially if I can sign Crede to a 1 yr deal.

what are you talking about Frandsen "not getting the job done"? the last month he played in he hit .370 in 20 games, and played a stellar 2nd base. The man would have had a chance to prove himself as the everyday second baseman but an incredibly unfortunate injury kept him out. He is great and has the potencial to be a faster jeff kent. he has incredible upside, just give it some time.
Signing crede wuld be an okay option, but i'd rather trade sanchez for a 3rd basemen, he is useless to use, and is at his highest value. currently we have a surplus of pitching, mainly leftys. we have 3, count em, 3 pitches who won minor league pitching honors (Burgamer, Alderson, Morrison) including best starter (Burgamer, at age 19). Did i mention that he is also a lefty? trading sanchez would open up that spot for Lowry to return, whom most people seem to forget led this team in wins twice as the number 4 pitcher. We also have Kevin Pucetas, who is 25-6 with a 2.34ERA in 3 seasons of A ball. Trading sanchez would free up a rotation spot for any of the 4 minor league pitchers who dominated their respective levels, as well as for Lowry, whose privious contributions to the team merit him the first shot at being the teams 5th starter. Also, assuming Johnson retires after 2009, we'd have another spot open for any of those previously named pitchers. A deal involving sanchez would benefit us offensively as well as un-crowding our rotation for the future. His value has never been higher, and the giants need to capitalize this situation.

Ya age and health are definetely issues but picture this:
1. CF. Roberts/Winn P.Lincecum
2. 2B. Frandsen P. Cain
3. LF. Ramirez P. Johnson
4. 3B. Crede P. Lowry
5. RF. Rowand P. Zito
6. C. Molina
7. 1B. Sandoval
8. SS. Renteria
9. P. ??????
If HEALTHY and Zito returning to form then this would raise some brows!

Although a Dodger's fan, this could be a good deal for the Giants. Yes, there is risk involved but I think a risk worth taking. If the Dodgers hadn't re-signed Blake, I would have been happy to get Crede.

But he is also in the walk year of his contract and we know how well he played the last time that happen (48 HRS, second in MVP voting).

hey sf mAN. u on crack dude? Sanchez at his highest level? Wake up. Sanchez pitched like crap the second half of the year. Worn out. A tool. First half different story. Maybe what you meant was trade him next off season when his value for 1 year is at its peak. U wont get crap for him. Get crede which for 1 year will be better than anything we have had for years at least from a home run stand point. Get manny and now you have increased your home runs(shortstop 15 plus) 3rd base(15 plus) outfield(35 plus). Dont mess with the pitching. get some damm hitters. I want 10-5 run games not 2 nothing.
